What's New on Mahindra Thar Roxx?
Introduction
- Mahindra launched the Thar Roxx in India on 15 August 2024.
- Though it is basically a five-door version of the Thar, the Roxx boasts much more equipment such as ADAS and 4x4 in more variants.
- Also, the Roxx is based on a new and lighter M_Glyde platform that makes it 40kg lighter than its predecessor.
- Moreover, the entire body shell is constructed from high-strength steel, including the metal hard top.
- In March 2025, the carmaker made some changes to the Roxx, majorly inside its cabin.

Exterior of the Mahindra Thar Roxx
- As for the Thar Roxx's exterior there are no design or styling changes at all since its launch.
- The Roxx can be had in its existing shades including the signature Battleship Grey.
- So yes, the Roxx continues to be the bigger sibling of the Thar three-door.
- And it's not just the wheelbase and the number of doors that have increased, but the overall size as well.
- And despite its large proportions, Mahindra has managed to keep the essential off-road attributes.
- This includes an approach angle of 41.7 degrees and a departure angle of 36.1 degrees.
- Additionally, the Roxx's ramp-over angle is 23.9 degrees and the water-wading capability is 650mm.

Interior of the Mahindra Thar Roxx
- The Mahindra Thar Roxx was initially launched with a lighter shade inside its cabin.
- However, with the feedback that the white upholstery gets soiled easily, Mahindra revamped the Thar Roxx with a new dark interior shade.
- Though this fix was rolled out quickly, the Roxx can be had in the lighter shade previously launched.
- As for the new Mocha shade theme, it is paired with black-coloured materials for the plastics and even the upholstery.

- The top-spec 4x4 Roxx model gets seats adorned in Mocha Brown and black coloured faux leather with contrasting stitching.
- Speaking of the plastics in the brown shade, plenty of sections on the upper dashboard, lower dash, and sides sections get this brown colour now.
- Most of the other features and equipment are unchanged from the existing line-up of variants of the Thar Roxx.
- The USPs of the Thar Roxx include ADAS, Xplor and 4Xplor, CrawlSmart and IntelliTurn, apart from the Pentalink suspension and dampers.

Powertrain of the Mahindra Thar Roxx
- Mahindra has powered the base variant of the Thar Roxx with a 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol engine.
- This is a powerful engine producing 160bhp and 330Nm of torque.
- On the other hand, the RWD diesel model gets a 2.2-litre diesel mHawk engine producing 150bhp and 330Nm of torque.
- However, both engine options come mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.
- Now, the higher-spec and petrol AT variants get a more powerful 2.0-litre mill mated to a six-speed torque converter.
- However, buyers do not get the option of 4x4 for the petrol versions.
- Nevertheless, the Thar Roxx diesel automatics come in both states of tune.
- According to the brochure, there's a 150bhp and 330Nm state of tune, and another most powerful Scorpio-N matching 171bhp and 370Nm in top-spec models.

car&bike Expert Take
“The Mahindra Thar Roxx completely changes the Thar experience by considering practicality the most, without giving up its legendary off-road DNA either. With its five-door layout, exceptional ride quality, and a cabin full of the latest tech, it’s one compelling, do-it-all package you cannot ignore.”

When the original Mahindra Thar appeared, it was compelling in its own way to off-road enthusiasts, but its three-door layout was frowned upon by families. The Mahindra Thar Roxx then addressed this exact problem, as it followed the original Thar with a heavily modified ladder-frame chassis and a new five-door frame.
The Roxx is available in both petrol and diesel engines, both manual and automatic transmissions, and also in RWD or 4WD configurations. Mahindra has added a lot of other important features to the vehicle, like Level 2 ADAS, a panoramic sunroof, and a Harman Kardon audio system. This machine no longer behaves like a traditional utilitarian tool; it has changed into a tech-rich off-roader.

Editor-in-Chief Girish Karkera had done a first-drive review of the Roxx some time back, which you can check out on our YouTube channel. He also wrote a piece explaining the vehicle’s utility and niche features, and we have incorporated insights from both pieces into this review. You’ll come across them as you keep reading forward.
Under the hood, the Thar Roxx keeps the same powertrains as the brand's larger SUVs, so that you won’t find any compromises in performance. There’s a 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol and a 2.2-litre mHawk turbo-diesel, and both engines have six-speed manual and six-speed torque-converter automatic options.
The diesel engine comes in two states of tune depending on the drivetrain. Lower variants put out 150 bhp and 330 Nm, while the higher-spec automatic models generate slightly more: 172 bhp and 370 Nm (or 400 Nm in the RWD AT). The petrol motor is remarkably refined, punches up to 160 bhp on the manual and up to 174 bhp with 380 Nm on the automatic.
According to Girish,
“While the longer wheelbase might slightly hinder extreme off-roading compared to the three-door, Mahindra has added a ‘Crawl Smart’ 4x4 function (essentially off-road cruise control).”
Engine Specifications
| Engine | Power | Torque | Transmission | Drivetrain |
| 2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol | 160 bhp - 174 bhp | 330 Nm - 380 Nm | Six-speed manual / Six-speed automatic | RWD |
| 2.2-Litre Turbo Diesel | 150 bhp - 172 bhp | 330 Nm - 400 Nm | Six-speed manual / Six-speed automatic | RWD / 4WD |
Driving Experience: Real World
City Driving
Despite being an imposing vehicle, the Thar Roxx can easily cut through urban environments. Thanks to the electric power steering (EPS), it’s now easier to manoeuvre at slow speeds. The torquey engines ensure you don't need to work the gearbox hard, and the six-speed automatic gives smooth, jerk-free shifts during traffic crawls. As for the seating stance, it is commanding, giving you a full view of the road ahead. But there are a few blind spots you’ll have to be wary of because of the thick pillars.
Highway Driving
Out on the open road, the longer wheelbase (2,850 mm) makes sure the Roxx stays planted and stable at triple-digit speeds, swallowing uneven stretches without disturbance. At 100 kmph, the engines operate silently, while still leaving plenty of grunt in reserve for quick overtaking. Furthermore, Level 2 ADAS is here, bringing with it features like adaptive cruise control that reduce driver fatigue on long cross-country stints.
Off-Road Driving
In this criterion, the Thar Roxx becomes unstoppable. The 4WD variants get terrain modes, an electronic locking differential, and hill descent control. This vehicle also has an approach angle of 41.7 degrees and a departure angle of 36.1 degrees; yes, this means you can go through challenging terrain without hitting your vehicle's bumpers. The suspension works well, too, keeping the Roxx's wheel firmly planted in dangerous terrain.

Instead of just stretching the three-door chassis, Mahindra has sculpted the Roxx differently to look proportionate and authoritative. The design has a certain language that we need to point out; it sticks to its utilitarian roots while also appearing as a premium family SUV.
Its overall footprint overshadows its smaller sibling. Mahindra's engineers have managed to keep the rugged charm intact, as seen in the vehicle’s exposed hinges and upright pillars.
Girish specifies,
“Underneath, the Roxx sits on a new platform internally dubbed ‘K4’ and marketed as ‘Glide.’”
Dimensions Comparison
| Dimension | Mahindra Thar Roxx | Mahindra Scorpio N | Force Gurkha 5-Door |
| Length | 4,428 mm | 4,662 mm | 4,390 mm |
| Width | 1,870 mm | 1,917 mm | 1,865 mm |
| Height | 1,923 mm | 1,857 mm | 2,095 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,850 mm | 2,750 mm | 2,825 mm |
The Scorpio N is the longest and widest SUV in the comparison. The Thar Roxx is the longest in wheelbase, and this assists in enhancing the comfort and stability of the rear seat more than conventional off-roaders. In the meantime, the Gurkha 5-Door is the tallest, which is indicative of its hardcore off-road orientation with high ground clearance and an upright body shape.

The Mahindra Thar Roxx features a bold exterior design with its five-door frame, significantly upping the outer profile of the standard Thar into a more premium lifestyle SUV.
Front Profile
- The face has a six-slat body-colored grille that separates its identity from the three-door Thar.
- It has a modernised lighting setup with LED projector headlamps and C-shaped LED DRLs.
- It also has an aggressive, high-set front bumper with LED fog lamps and a faux skid plate.
Side Profile
- The wheelbase is extended by 2,850 mm to make room for the added rear doors.
- There are squarish, pronounced wheel arches with 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels on the higher trims.
- The Roxx also gets functional side steps installed from the factory for easier entry and exit.
- Rear door handles are smartly fitted into the C-pillar here to keep the clean look.
- This vertical arrangement maintains the silhouette of the classic three-door off-roader.
Rear Profile
- The rear has that classic off-roader aura, with its full-size spare wheel mounted directly on the side-hinged tailgate.
- The LED taillights are boxy, mimicking the C-shaped lighting motif at the vehicle’s front.
- Once a highly requested feature, there is now a remote-opening fuel filler cap.

‘Premium’ is the first word that we reflected on when we checked out the interior of the Mahindra That Roxx. The entire setup’s loaded with tech and gives off a more “luxurious” feel compared to the three-door model.
Girish notes,
“The interior is a massive leap forward. It feels premium, busy in a good way, and well-finished with dual-tone textures and quality plastics.”
Cabin Layout and Quality
Inside, the dashboard has been modernised with soft-touch materials and a black and white/beige dual-tone theme. There is a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the cockpit, sitting alongside a fully digital instrument cluster of the same size. To our touch, the switchgear felt robust, while the tactile toggle switches gave off the familiar rugged off-roader vibe. The higher trims also benefit from soft-touch materials on the door pads.

Seating Comfort
Front Row
The front seats are wide, firmly bolstered, and finally have a ventilation function; a blessing for Indian summers. The driver enjoys a high view of the bonnet, and to make this experience more rewarding, the higher variants get an electrically adjustable driver's seat. Additionally, a padded central armrest is available.
Second Row
Here, the newly added rear bench changes the game. Space is now generous, and the longer wheelbase manages much better legroom for rear passengers. The seats are also well-contoured with a comfortable backrest angle, while other benefits include a 60:40 split function, dedicated AC vents, and USB charging ports.
Features That Improve Daily Use
- A massive panoramic sunroof hovers above the passengers’ heads, making the cabin feel incredibly airy.
- There is a nine-speaker custom-tuned Harman Kardon sound system available, too.
- A wireless phone charging pad is also present.
- The driver gets a 360-degree surround-view camera for tight parking spots.
- The cabin is further equipped with automatic climate control and rear AC vents.
- Finally, there is a cooled glovebox to keep your drinks chilled on road trips.

The Mahindra Thar Roxx kicks off at a highly competitive Rs. 12.39 lakh for the base MX1 RWD petrol manual, and as you climb the variant ladder, prices cross Rs. 22.25 lakh for the fully-loaded AX7L 4WD Diesel AT. This wide price bracket of almost Rs. 10.00 lakh means there is a different Roxx available for every budget along with a Star Edition (special edition launched in 2026) for exclusivity.
Ex-Showroom Prices (India)
Variant | Engine & Transmission | Ex-Showroom Price |
MX1 RWD | 2.0-Litre Petrol Manual / 2.2-Litre Diesel Manual | Rs. 12.39 Lakh - Rs. 13.60 Lakh |
MX3 RWD | 2.0-Litre Petrol AT / 2.2-Litre Diesel Manual & AT | Rs. 14.57 Lakh - Rs. 16.95 Lakh |
MX5 RWD | 2.0-Litre Petrol MT & AT / 2.2-Litre Diesel MT & AT | Rs. 15.90 Lakh - Rs. 17.90 Lakh |
AX5L RWD | 2.2-Litre Diesel Automatic | Rs. 18.39 Lakh |
AX7L RWD | 2.0-Litre Petrol AT / 2.2-Litre Diesel MT & AT | Rs. 18.86 Lakh - Rs. 20.00 Lakh |
AX5L / AX7L 4WD | 2.2-Litre Diesel MT & AT (4WD) | Rs. 20.38 Lakh - Rs. 22.25 Lakh |
While being a heavy, body-on-frame SUV, the Mahindra Thar Roxx surprisingly delivers some acceptable mileage numbers. The diesel engines win the topic of mileage uncontested with their low running costs and long-distance touring capabilities.
In the real world, the diesel consistently returns between 13 and 15 kmpl on mixed runs, while the petrol engine is significantly thirstier. With an ARAI rating of 12.4 kmpl, real-world city driving drops fuel efficiency as low as single digits. Stop-and-go traffic will return around 10 to 12 kmpl in the petrol setup, but steady highway cruising can slightly nudge it back up to around 13.5 kmpl.
Observed Fuel Efficiency During Testing
Engine & Transmission | ARAI-Claimed Mileage | Real-World Mileage (Approximate) |
2.2-Litre Diesel Manual | 15.2 kmpl | 14 - 15 kmpl |
2.2-Litre Diesel Automatic | 15.2 kmpl | 13 - 14 kmpl |
2.0-Litre Petrol Manual | 12.4 kmpl | 13 - 14 kmpl |
2.0-Litre Petrol Automatic | 12.4 kmpl | 12 - 13 kmpl |
The Mahindra Thar Roxx is a highly safe vehicle since it has all the required safety ratings that Indian regulations want a vehicle to have. Notably, it’s the first body-on-frame SUV to pull off a five-star Bharat NCAP rating, also achieving the highest overall score for any ICE vehicle tested at the time of the results.
Girish points out,
“It might lose a tiny bit of that ‘personal’ rebel vibe of the three-door, but it gains massive appeal in the safety department as a legitimate everyday SUV.”
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
Built on a stiffened chassis, the Roxx feels like an absolute tank. Standard passive safety equipment includes six airbags, three-point seatbelts for all passengers, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and pretensioners with force limiters for the front seats. The five-star Bharat NCAP safety rating we already mentioned registered 31.09/32 for adult and 45/49 for child safety.
Active Safety and Stability Systems
The Thar Roxx has a lot of active safety tech with features like Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control, ABS with EBD, and Brake Assist. Higher variants get a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and a comprehensive Level 2 ADAS suite, stacked with additional elements like Automatic Emergency Braking, forward collision warning, and Adaptive Cruise Control.
Safety Verdict
Overall, Mahindra has left no stone unturned, making the Thar Roxx one of the safest body-on-frame SUVs you can buy in India, as we generally see from the brand’s lineup.
Technology has taken a massive leap inside the Mahindra Thar Roxx, changing the vehicle from a bare-bones off-roader to a genuinely premium lifestyle vehicle.
Infotainment and Interface
- Twin 10.25-inch high-definition screens sit comfortably on the dashboard. One’s for the infotainment system, and the other for the fully digital driver’s display.
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on higher trims, connected to the Adrenox car suite.
- A custom-tuned nine-speaker Harman Kardon sound system with QuantumLogic Surround technology has been assembled inside the cabin, delivering impressive audio clarity.

Cabin Convenience and Practical Features
- There is a massive panoramic sunroof that increases the sense of space for the passengers.
- Front-row occupants get ventilated seats, while the driver enjoys an electronically powered seat.
- The Level 2 ADAS has 10 key features, two of them including adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree surround-view camera with a blind-spot monitor.
- There is also an electronic parking brake with auto-hold and an acoustic windshield.
Unlike its three-door sibling, the Mahindra Thar Roxx stands out with more practicality in this regard. It has a very usable 447 litres of boot space, which easily swallows weekend luggage for a family of four. The load bay is wide and fairly squared off, meaning you can put larger suitcases into it alongside soft duffel bags. But if you need more room, folding the rear seats will further increase the capacity to a generous 644 litres. This is nearly triple that of the three-door model. And finally, the split tailgate design, with its swing-out lower door and flip-up rear glass, completes the touch of classic utility when loading lighter items.
Sitting atop a ladder-frame chassis with WATT’s Link suspension, Frequency Dependent Damping, and Hydraulic Rebound Stoppers, the Mahindra Thar Roxx pulls off both off-roading and urban strolls.
City Driving
The light electric power steering makes moving this large SUV around traffic surprisingly effortless. The six-speed Aisin torque converter automatic is incredibly smooth. While the low-speed crawls are consistent, the ride can feel lumpy over sharp urban potholes due to the ladder-frame architecture.
Highway Driving
High-speed stability outperforms the older three-door model; it stays planted even at triple digits. While body roll is present during corners because of its tall stance, the refined engines are meant for confident, linear overtaking. But do not expect the entirely flat ride of a monocoque crossover, however.

Off-Road Driving
Off-roading is what the Mahindra Thar Roxx does best.
It has segment-first Crawl Smart Assist and IntelliTurn to conquer tight, technical trails and with 226 mm of ground clearance, a 650 mm water wading depth, and 4XPLOR terrain modes (Snow, Sand, Mud), it bulldozes over rough terrain.
Girish observes,
“On the road, the refinement is startling. The new suspension setup has significantly reduced the "bounce" typical of ladder-frame SUVs, making it feel surprisingly close to a monocoque SUV like the XUV700 in terms of stability.”
There are five variants of the Mahindra Thar Roxx. While all of them have almost the same safety suite, they can be differentiated according to prices, engine setup, and some key features.
While the MX1 gives you six airbags as standard, it would be wise not to ignore the higher trims either, such as the AX5L, which raises the bar with Level 2 ADAS. The table below explains for whom each variant is meant to be attractive.
Variant | Engine & Gearbox | Key Additions | Best Suited For |
MX1 | 2.0-Litre Petrol / 2.2-Litre Diesel, Manual | LED headlamps, 10.25-inch touchscreen, 6 airbags, ESC | Purists wanting the Roxx presence on a strict budget |
MX3 | 2.0-Litre Petrol / 2.2-Litre Diesel, Manual/AT | Drive modes, rear camera, cruise control | Urban drivers wanting an automatic at a sensible price |
MX5 | 2.0-Litre Petrol / 2.2-Litre Diesel, Manual/AT | Single-pane sunroof, 18-inch alloys, 4x4 option (Diesel) | Buyers looking for the sweet spot of features and capability |
AX5L | 2.2-Litre Diesel, AT (RWD/4WD) | Level 2 ADAS, connected tech, digital driver's display | Highway cruisers prioritising active safety tech |
AX7L | 2.0-Litre Petrol / 2.2-Litre Diesel, Manual/AT | Panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, Harman Kardon audio | Buyers wanting a premium, fully loaded flagship experience |
The Essentials That You Don’t Get
- Four-wheel drive is only on the diesel variants; petrol models are rear-wheel drive only.
- Third-row seating is completely absent.
- The vehicle misses out on telescopic steering adjustment, meaning drivers can only adjust the wheel for rake.
- You don’t benefit from a fully flat ride quality like monocoque SUVs.
With a vast variant list, narrowing down the right Thar Roxx depends entirely on how you plan to use the vehicle and what your ultimate driving goals are.
For Urban Commute: MX3 Petrol Automatic
If you mainly drive within city limits and only care about commanding road presence, the MX3 Petrol AT is perfect. It has a smooth powertrain and all the essential modern features.
For Feature-Conscious Families: AX7L Diesel RWD Automatic
For highway trips and daily family duties, the AX7L RWD will excite. You get the panoramic sunroof, ADAS, and ventilated seats, and the torquey, efficient diesel motor.
For Hardcore Adventurers: AX7L Diesel 4WD Automatic
If you plan to push the vehicle to its maximum limits, do not hesitate with the top variant. The 4WD system also has IntelliTurn, electronic locking differentials, and terrain modes, making this an unstoppable force on the trails.

The Thar Roxx causes some great disturbance in the mid-size SUV segment, as it tries to lure buyers away from traditional family vehicles. It competes against other feature-rich monocoques like the Tata Harrier, as well as rugged alternatives like the Force Gurkha 5-Door.

While rivals have better fuel economy and plusher rides, none can match the Roxx's tech-heavy interiors and sheer go-anywhere capability. The Harrier, for instance, leads with its rear-seat space and urban dynamics, while the Scorpio-N has a more practical third-row option for larger families.
| Model | Engine | Power / Torque | Key Value Proposition | Ex-Showroom Price Range |
| Mahindra Thar Roxx | 2.0-Litre Petrol / 2.2-Litre Diesel | Up to 174 bhp / 380 Nm | Unmatched road presence, extreme 4x4 capability, tech-loaded | Rs. 12.39 – Rs. 22.25 lakh |
| Tata Harrier | 2.0-Litre Diesel | 168 bhp / 350 Nm | Striking design, spacious second row, excellent highway manners | Rs. 14.99 – Rs. 25.89 lakh |
| Mahindra Scorpio-N | 2.0-Litre Petrol / 2.2-Litre Diesel | Up to 200 bhp / 380 Nm | Tough build, three-row practicality, strong engines | Rs. 13.85 – Rs. 24.54 lakh |
Which Mid-Size SUV Should You Choose?
- Choose the Mahindra Thar Roxx if you want an iconic design, serious off-road hardware, and a commanding driving position.
- Choose the Tata Harrier if a plush ride, generous rear passenger space, and sharp urban styling matter most to you.
- Choose the Mahindra Scorpio-N if you need the ruggedness of a ladder-frame chassis but require the flexibility of a third row of seats.
Pros
- Majestic road presence and iconic design
- Phenomenal off-road capability with advanced 4x4 tech
- Highly refined engines and smooth automatic transmissions
- Feature-rich cabin with panoramic sunroof and ADAS
Cons
- Lumpy ride quality over broken tarmac
- Petrol engines return very poor fuel efficiency
- No 4x4 option available with the petrol powertrain
- Lack of interior storage spaces for everyday items
Verdict
The Mahindra Thar Roxx is a triumph of automotive evolution. It takes the standard Thar’s emotional appeal and fuses it with more practicality, technology, and refinement to become your primary family car. And more interestingly, it no longer has those compromises that once defined the off-road lifestyle.
With its punchy engines, Level 2 ADAS, and a premium cabin, the Roxx challenges both the urban and the off-road routes. Yes, the ride quality you get is occasionally bouncy, and the petrol variants will often take you to the fuel pump. But for those who want structural solidity, an imposing road stance, and the freedom to conquer any terrain, the Thar Roxx operates in a league of its own. It is one of the most unapologetically bold and highly capable SUVs on the market today.

Here are Girish’s final words for this vehicle,
“The original Thar was a success because it was a "cool" daily driver, but it lacked practicality. The Thar Roxx fixes those flaws. It’s more rounded, more feature-packed, and much more relevant for the average family.”
Mahindra Thar Roxx Mileage
