2023 Honda City Review:

The 2023 Honda City represents a refreshed version of the fifth-generation sedan that debuted in India in 2021. Building on its legacy, this new model incorporates enhancements inspired by the robust hybrid variant, the City e:HEV, introduced in 2022. In a fiercely competitive and off-late active compact sedan segment, the City 2023 aims to uphold its premium and straightforward appeal.

The City 2023 offers two distinct aesthetic options: Elegance and Sporty. The Elegance trim retains the essence of the pre-facelift design, while the Sporty variant introduces more pronounced bumpers, a mesh grille, and faux carbon fiber-finished lower extensions. The fog lamp housings exhibit greater intricacy, and the rear bumper boasts a diffuser-like design. It's important to note that the Sporty trim is exclusive to the City e:HEV and the top-tier petrol trim (VX) and definitely offers a unique look in the segment.

The City 2023 is able to maintain the sleek and balanced silhouette of its predecessor, with different alloy wheel choices being the only notable change in its profile. This facelift marginally enhances the already appealing aesthetics of the fifth-generation of the sedan, contributing to its premium look.

Inside, the City 2023 offers a plush and comfortable cabin with spacious and accommodating seats. The driver can easily find an ideal driving position, thanks to adjustable steering for both height and rake. However, it's worth noting that there are no ventilated seats in the sedan, something seen on rivals like Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Kushaq.

The central touchscreen remains the same size but boasts improved resolution. It now supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a first for the City. The rear camera delivers clearer images, and the top variant even includes a side camera to assist with lane changes when the left indicator is activated.

The instrument cluster presents a cleaner and sharper display, blending analog and digital elements rather well. In the top trim, the left pod functions as a digital display with customizable information.

Wireless charging has made its debut in the City now, integrated into the center console near the center armrest in the e:HEV, and available as an additional unit atop the cup holders in the petrol version. Notably, the City retains the manual handbrake, whereas the hybrid version features an electronic parking brake.

The City 2023 incorporates six advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in all trims except the base variant, forming the Honda Sensing suite. These features include a collision mitigation braking system, lane-keeping assist system, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, road departure mitigation system, auto high beams, and a lane-watch camera.

Honda Sensing utilizes a camera behind the front windshield to aid with braking, lane-keeping, and adaptive cruise control, even adjusting speed based on the vehicle ahead on the highway. In the e:HEV, this system can operate at speeds below 30 km/h and can come to a complete stop, restarting as the vehicle ahead moves.

Lane departure and brake assist are active at all times, while steering assist and adaptive cruise control activate at highway speeds of 65 km/h and 72 km/h, respectively. Overall, these systems perform effectively, though users may need some time to acclimate specially when it comes to using them in most Indian road conditions.

The powertrain options remain unchanged from the pre-facelift model. This sedan car offers a 1.5-liter petrol engine paired with a six-speed manual or a CVT, producing 120 bhp and 145 Nm of torque. In the e:HEV, there's a 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle engine with an eCVT, which ensures 108 bhp and 253 Nm of torque.

Both engines offer refinement and smooth operation but become less enthusiastic when pushed hard, especially with the automatic transmissions. The petrol manual variant clearly offers a more engaging driving experience, although its relevance may be limited in congested traffic conditions.

The e:HEV comes with three driving modes - EV Drive, Hybrid Drive, and Engine Drive - which can be selected automatically or manually based on driving conditions and battery charge level. As a driver you can choose between a pure electric mode, optimal efficiency through combined engine and electric power, and high-speed cruising powered by the engine alone.

Pros

  • Potent Engine
  • Sporty Design
  • Spacious Cabin

Cons

  • Honda has missed out on the spirited 1.0-litre turbo petrol for India
  • Outdated Infotainment System
  • Slightly Expensive

Verdict

A premium, well loaded, and well designed car – fitting of the City nameplate. There are bits we could have been happier with, but there's plenty here to excite the segment. And the die-hard Honda City fan.

It's very good car in this segment. It's stylish, gives good mileage and is a value for money car. The only thing that should be improved is the diesel engine noise. A little noisy.

Dear Team, This complaint pertains my private car (vehicle registration number:UP32FH6233 purchased in the year 2014 from Stallion Honda Lucknow. Since purchase,my car has been regularly serviced only at Stallion Honda's workshop and has always been under a very good maintained condition. In the month of April'2018 i got my car serviced at Stallion Honda.(invoice of the same attached for your kind reference). Recently,my brother alongwith his family went to Delhi and while returning to Lucknow on 21st June'2018 all of a sudden, car stopped at Agra Express highway at around 3:30pm. Car was running at a constant speed of approx 90-100km/hr. Hope you can imagine our condition where we were stuck at expressway, alongwith ladies and family members,mid-day,47 degree temperature and no help around.... After some time we got help from patroling van and arranged our car towed to Agra at MGR Automobile Pvt Ltd. workshop. Rather than returning to lucknow my family had to stay at Agra. After vehicle inspection,we were intimated that Engine Block part of the engine broke while vehicle was running and we were handed over an estimate of Rs.1.5lakh. PLEASE ADDRESS BELOW QUESTIONS: 1. If there was any defect in above part of the engine, why i was not intimated by Stallion Honda at the time of vehicle service in April'2018.Do they only perform superficial check-up on the car while servicing leaving vital check-ups un-attended and risking life of customers?? 2. There is certain life of engine parts and when it comes to the vital parts of the engine, durability is much more.Atleast we purchased Honda car because of its superior quality parts and performance and after this case we were lest disappointed as mere in the tenure of approx 5 years how can a major engine part result in a failure??this leaves a big questionmark on the quality of spare parts of HONDA CARS. 3.This incident could have resulted in a fatal road accident where my car could have dashed from behind from another speeding vehicle at expressway. Why should i not move to consumer court and file a case against Honda Cars India and Stallion honda demanding vehicle repair expense, towing charges, familt stay at Agra hotel, taxi charges from Agra to lucknow as all these expense are incurred just because of sheer neglegence and pathetic service of Stallion Honda and inferior parts quality provided by Honda cars. My vehicle is at MGR Automobile Pvt Ltd. workshop,Agra and I am facing a lot of trouble in local commuting. This is affecting my business as well. EXPECTING A PROMPT REVERT FROM YOUR SIDE AND A QUICK SOLUTION TO MY PROBLEM.

It's a perfect combination of Safety, Performance and Style in that order of Priority. The R and D gone into designing a Honda is distinctly visible. Although am a Maruti loyalist and would've gone for a much cheaper Ciaz if it had a Sunroof but now, it's Thank God it didn't! The auto transmission in the form of CVT is a wonder. The prospective buyer must shed the typical Indian mentality of 'Automatic Consumption is Higher'! The systems in the machine itself ensures fuel economy by the driver. It's already giving much more milage than my earlier Swift (Petrol). The Cruise Control pampers you so much that one looks forward for opportunities to drive more and drive long! The uphill driving becomes so easy. The auto stabilizing feature makes turning a child's play, without reducing speed. The Safety features are fool proof and too many. The dealership would be able to explain them better. The keyless entry is 'literal' as one doesn't require to even push the remote button to enter the Car. The proximity sensor of the driver unlocks the car. A small but extremely useful feature. Some Shortcomings:- - The high beam of headlights are too low for convenient driving in absolute dark conditions. In hill driving, it actually becomes dangerous. - The User Guide Book is confusing, voluminous and not vehicle specific. From Africa to East Asia to India to 6 variants covered in one book. Every time, in each page, you've to look for your machine variant. Poor cost cutting measure by Honda, must say. One buying a 13Lakh machine would atleast expect a dedicated user manual. - Reverse Parking Camera is excellent with three views but a Sensor should also have been there. Makes reversing easy. - The ?700/- worth WiFi adaptor should be part of the basic kitting atleast in the top variants. Shows Brand Honda in poort light as it reduces utility of the beautiful infotainment display. - I was a bit surprised to find that the top end variant too comes without floor mats! Overall a 10 on 10 for the Car in Petrol variant. Dealership quite responsive, unlike the arrogant Hundai. Would be happy to address any specific queries too if it's allowed in C&B review. Posting for the first time, though C&B helped me a lot in decision making, in the past as well as now.

The petrol variant of the Honda City is equipped with a robust 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine, known for its impressive power output. This petrol engine generates a substantial 121 PS of power and delivers a torque of 145 Nm. This configuration ensures that the Honda City provides a spirited and responsive performance, ideal for both city commuting and highway cruising. Complementing the petrol engine is a 1.5-liter i-DTEC diesel engine, known for its efficiency and remarkable torque output. The diesel engine packs 100 PS of power and an impressive 200 Nm of torque. These figures translate to a strong and capable performance, particularly when it comes to fuel efficiency and torque delivery. The diesel variant of the Honda City is a commendable choice for those who prioritize long-distance drives and fuel savings. This transmission flexibility ensures that drivers can select the most suitable configuration for their specific driving conditions and style. The CVT, in particular, adds to the convenience and comfort of driving by providing seamless gear transitions and an efficient power delivery.
The Honda City, a popular choice in the sedan segment, boasts impressive engine specifications that align with its reputation for performance and efficiency. The specific horsepower and torque figures, however, may vary depending on the engine type and variant, providing customers with options that cater to diverse driving needs. For the 1.5-liter i-VTEC petrol engine, drivers can expect a commendable 121 horsepower. This level of horsepower indicates a lively and responsive engine, capable of delivering an enjoyable and spirited driving experience. In addition to horsepower, this engine generates 145 Nm (Newton-meters) of torque, which is pivotal for powering the vehicle and ensuring responsive acceleration. This diesel engine produces 100 horsepower, highlighting its ability to deliver solid performance while prioritizing fuel economy. Importantly, it excels in the torque department, generating an impressive 200 Nm of torque. The significant torque figure is particularly beneficial for city driving and highway cruising, as it ensures strong low-end power and responsive performance.

When it comes to acceleration, the Honda City has proven itself as a capable and dependable performer, thanks to its well-engineered powertrain. The acceleration experience in the Honda City is characterized by its efficient engine and transmission setup, delivering a blend of smoothness and quick responsiveness that caters to diverse driving needs.

In the petrol engine variant, equipped with the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), the Honda City stands out for its ability to provide seamless and consistent power delivery. CVT technology eliminates the need for traditional gear shifts, ensuring that the acceleration process is not only smooth but also uninterrupted. This translates into a refined and enjoyable driving experience, especially in city traffic or during highway cruising. The CVT optimizes power delivery, ensuring that the engine operates in the most efficient and responsive manner, allowing for a seamless transition between various driving conditions.

On the other hand, the diesel engine variant of the Honda City distinguishes itself with strong low-end torque, which is particularly beneficial for quick acceleration. Torque, especially at lower engine speeds, plays a pivotal role in propelling the vehicle forward swiftly. The diesel engine's ability to provide robust torque from the get-go ensures that the City can make confident and prompt accelerations, making it an excellent choice for urban driving scenarios where frequent stops and starts are common.
