car&bike Expert Take
“The Hyundai Alcazar is for those who want something more than compact SUVs, a practical third row. Loaded with cabin comfort, refined engines, and several tech features, it is not the most engaging handler, but its ride quality is apt as a premium six-seater or seven-seater.”

Introduced as an alternative to the popular Creta, the Hyundai Alcazar first entered the Indian market in 2021 with extra seating flexibility. Over the past few years, the South Korean manufacturer kept updating the SUV, bringing in several cosmetic refreshes, while slowly getting rid of the older 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine to offer a punchier 1.5-litre turbo-petrol unit on retail.
We have often said that Hyundai sells this vehicle as an urban cruiser, not a rugged off-roader, and it got its last facelift update in 2024. Undoubtedly, it is above the Creta, but below the discontinued Tucson, having either a six-seater option with captain seats or a traditional seven-seater bench. For daily school runs and weekend highway trips, the Hyundai Alcazar looks after such requirements with equal ease, as it thinks about occupant comfort the most.

This review brings several expert opinions from the car&bike team. Auto Journalist Seshan Vijayraghvan reviewed its major changes in the 2024 facelift. On the other side, editor Bilal Firfiray explained the practicality of its second row, and Jafar Rizvi listed some changes regarding how it outdid its predecessor. Their insights have been infused into this article as well.
The Hyundai Alcazar’s powertrain lineup is more about refinement and linear power delivery, and less about aggressive acceleration. Buyers get two choices here: a modern turbo-petrol and a highly efficient diesel.
Engine Options Tested
The following table lists the current engine choices available in this SUV:
| Engine | Power | Torque | Transmission Options |
| 1.5-Litre Turbo-Petrol | 158 bhp | 253 Nm | Six-speed manual / Seven-speed DCT |
| 1.5-Litre Diesel | 114 bhp | 250 Nm | Six-speed manual / Six-speed automatic |
Driving Experience: Real World
City Driving
In heavy traffic, the Alcazar’s steering is light, meaning parking and U-turns are effortless. But the diesel engine leads here with its strong low-end torque, making sure you don't need to be doing frequent gear changes.
Highway Driving
Out on the open road, the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol outperforms. It reaches triple-digit speeds while maintaining a quiet cabin. Notably, if overloaded, the diesel variant struggles during high-speed overtaking, since its 114 bhp output is not so punchy after all.
MT vs AT vs DCT
The six-speed manual gearbox is smooth and light, but if buyers want more efficiency, the diesel’s six-speed torque converter automatic is much better. However, the seven-speed DCT that comes with the turbo-petrol engine can do faster gear changes, although it hesitates at crawling speeds.

Bilal writes,
“There are the usual three drive modes: eco, normal and sport. While there’s not a noticeable difference between the first two, the sport mode does make the throttle slightly sharper.”
The Hyundai Alcazar looks a bit like the Creta, but with a longer wheelbase of 2,760 mm, opening up cabin space for the third row. The recent facelift also takes it closer to the brand's global SUV design language, one which has abandoned the older cascading grille format.
Here’s a summary of the car’s most noticeable elements:
- The proportions are quite good; it does not look like a half-baked five-seater anymore.
- It has a flatter bonnet, a tall roofline, and squared-off wheel arches.
- It’s slightly more compact than the Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV700.
- It’s also easier to park and manoeuvre than the other two.
Hyundai Alcazar vs Tata Safari vs Mahindra XUV700 Dimensions
Dimension | Hyundai Alcazar | Tata Safari | Mahindra XUV700 |
Length | 4,560 mm | 4,668 mm | 4,695 mm |
Width | 1,800 mm | 1,922 mm | 1,890 mm |
Height | 1,710 mm | 1,795 mm | 1,755 mm |
Wheelbase | 2,760 mm | 2,741 mm | 2,750 mm |
Ground Clearance | 200 mm | 205 mm | 200 mm |
Curb Weight | 1,435 - 1,485 kg | 1,825 kg | 1,815 - 1,960 kg |
Yes, notably, the Alcazar is a much lighter vehicle than the Safari or the XUV700, but that shouldn't be an issue unless you intend to test the vehicle's top speed on the highway. And since the Hyundai Alcazar does not sell itself as a ‘performance-first’ car, most of its buyers wouldn’t care about its final triple-digit.
The recent facelift of the Hyundai Alcazar in 2024 dropped its older, rounded elements for a sharper, more tech-forward design that will compel people on the road to take a second glance.
Seshan observes,
“While it shares some DNA with the Creta, the look is now more in line with Hyundai’s global SUV language, reminiscent of the Santa Fe and the flagship Palisade.”
Front Profile
The front profile has a bold, rectangular grille with H-shaped LED daytime running lights on either side. The main quad-LED headlamp clusters sit slightly lower on the bumper, in the presence of a faux silver skid plate.
Side Profile
Here, the 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels complement the squared arches nicely, and a strong shoulder line runs from the front fenders to the taillights. Also, the roof rails and the silver C-pillar smartly break down the glasshouse’s visual bulk.
Rear Profile
The rear gets rid of the older taillights for a new LED light bar. The H-motif is seen here too, while the chunky rear bumper with dual-tip exhausts rounds up its upright, confident stance.
‘Premium’ is the word that came to our minds first when we entered the Hyundai Alcazar. The brand has focused heavily on material quality, replacing hard plastics in high-touch areas with soft-touch materials and leatherette inserts. The dual-tone cabin theme takes the overall ambience a step further, making it feel like it’s a sophisticated sibling to the more expensive Tucson.
Cabin Layout and Quality
The dashboard has twin 10.25-inch screens fitted into a single curved panel. The dual-zone climate control’s physical buttons are available below the air vents, while fit and finish across the entire cabin is segment-leading. We found no squeaks or rattles over rough patches.
Seating Comfort
First Row
The front seats are solid, and the driver gets an eight-way power adjustment setup. They are also well-ventilated and positioned in such a way that provides excellent outward visibility.
Second Row
The six-seater variant’s captain seats are a highlight, offering fold-out tray tables, window blinds, and dedicated seat ventilation. There is also a ‘Boss Mode’ here, allowing the left rear passenger to push the front passenger seat forward for more legroom.
Third Row
Honestly, space here is tight. It mainly benefits children or adults for short trips. To access this row, the second-row seats must be slid forward, and there is not much space for under-thigh support. But there are dedicated AC vents and USB ports.

Seshan singles out its space,
“While access is easier now that the fixed center console is gone, the lack of a "tumble" function for the second row makes getting back there a bit of a climb.”
Hyundai has maintained an aggressive pricing strategy for the Alcazar. The entry-level Executive trim keeps the ex-showroom price reasonable, but the top-tier Signature variants do not hesitate, proudly displaying their Level 2 ADAS suite, ventilated seats, and premium Bose audio system.
Buyers must also remember that the matte colour options and dual-tone roofs will demand more than the standard exterior shades. We have listed the Hyundai Alcazar’s variant-wise pricing in the Indian market.
Hyundai Alcazar Ex-Showroom Prices in India
Variant | Powertrain | Ex-Showroom Price (Approx.) |
Executive | 1.5-Litre Petrol MT / Diesel MT | Rs. 14.99 – Rs. 15.99 Lakh |
Prestige | 1.5-Litre Petrol MT / Diesel MT | Rs. 17.18 – Rs. 17.78 Lakh |
Platinum | 1.5-Litre Petrol MT & DCT / Diesel MT & AT | Rs. 19.46 – Rs. 20.46 Lakh |
Signature | 1.5-Litre Petrol DCT / Diesel AT | Rs. 21.20 – Rs. 21.55 Lakh |
Buyers in the three-row family vehicle segment often prioritise fuel efficiency here because most of the time, these cars are treated as family-moving machines. The Hyundai Alcazar understands and adapts to this, with both its 1.5-Litre turbo-petrol and 1.5-Litre diesel powertrains giving you sensible running costs.
Here’s what we found out in our tests:
- The diesel variants are economically superior and non-negotiable for long highway drives.
- The petrol automatic variants, however, drop efficiency in heavy traffic.
- Both the seven-speed DCT and six-speed torque converter automatic transmissions are tuned well enough to reduce fuel consumption during light driving.
The following table outlines our observed mileage compared to the ARAI figures.
Observed Fuel Efficiency During Testing
| Engine & Transmission | ARAI Claimed Mileage | Real-World City Mileage | Real-World Highway Mileage |
| 1.5-Litre Petrol MT | 17.5 kmpl | 11-13 kmpl | 15-16 kmpl |
| 1.5-Litre Petrol DCT | 18 kmpl | 10-12 kmpl | 15-16 kmpl |
| 1.5-Litre Diesel MT | 20.4 kmpl | 14-16 kmpl | 18-19 kmpl |
| 1.5-Litre Diesel AT | 18.1 kmpl | 13-15 kmpl | 16-17 kmpl |
The Hyundai Alcazar has an incredible suite of safety features.
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
It has six airbags as standard, covering the driver, front passenger, and side curtains. Meanwhile, the body shell uses high-strength steel for structural rigidity. Three-point seatbelts have been made available for all passengers with ISOFIX child seat anchor mounts in the second row.
Active Safety and Stability Systems
Active safety features are plenty, such as an Anti-lock Braking System and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution combined with all-wheel disc brakes that offer excellent stopping power. Electronic Stability Control and Hill Start Assist Control also come as standard features. The higher variants, in particular, get Level 2 ADAS, containing 19 active features such as Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot Monitor, and Lane Keeping Assist. And finally, a 360-degree camera system connected to front parking sensors helps the vehicle slot into tight spots.

Safety Verdict
We need to mention that the Hyundai Alcazar has not received an official crash test rating from either Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP yet. It did score a four-star Latin NCAP rating due to its Level 2 ADAS, airbag inclusion, and advanced electronic stability systems.
The Hyundai Alcazar’s technological elements are extensive, borrowing heavily from the Creta, while offering additional upgrades for rear-seat passengers.
Infotainment and Interface
- The dashboard has twin 10.25-inch screens; the digital instrument cluster and the touchscreen infotainment system, respectively.
- The interface is highly responsive, but it needs a cable for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.
- All three rows get to enjoy the audio quality of the premium Bose sound system.
- The driver display is full of essential data like tyre pressure monitoring and a blind-spot view monitor.
Cabin Convenience and Practical Tech
- The car’s front and second-row passengers get ventilated seats.
- The driver's seat is electrically adjustable.
- The six-seater’s second row gets a ‘Boss Mode’ to push the front passenger seat forward.
- The panoramic sunroof can be voice-activated, while the dual-zone automatic climate control keeps you comfortable during long rides.

Jafar explains,
“The fixed centre console that previously held the wireless charging pad has been removed, with the pad now relocated to the back of the front centre console.”
The Hyundai Alcazar has ample boot space to handle everyday family duties, but the total carrying capacity depends on whether you want the six or seven-seater.
- With all three rows occupied, the SUV gives 180 litres of cargo capacity.
- This space is sufficient for a couple of soft duffel bags, but not for hard luggage.
- Folding the third row down increases the available volume, allowing for weekend luggage.
- The third-row seats can fold completely flat, so the loading bay looks smooth.
- The third row has a 50:50 split, giving flexibility to passenger and cargo layouts.
- A hands-free electric tailgate helps when you are loading the vehicle with full hands.
- Loading heavy suitcases is not hard at all due to the wide boot opening.

As we have already mentioned, this is a car that thinks about its passengers first over driving dynamics.
City Driving
Going through traffic crawls is relatively easy thanks to its light and nimble steering. The SUV is big, but its dimensions are smartly handled. Also, the suspension is soft, so vibrations from broken patches and sharp speed breakers do not disturb the cabin. And the 18-inch alloy wheels add to this experience, reducing sudden jerky experiences.
Highway Driving
Even at triple-digit speeds, this vehicle keeps its composure. Both the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines are powerfully capable, but in the latter, sometimes overtaking needs planning, especially if the car is full. The steering, meanwhile, picks up weight as the speed increases, but it struggles during aggressive manoeuvres. Here, body roll is also a concern.

Bilal observes,
“It is relaxing and easy to handle at city speeds, but if you want some fun, its power band is also enjoyable.”
Hyundai revised the Alcazar lineup in 2024, dividing it into four exciting trims.
- Executive: It has all the safety basics and standard electronic stability control.
- Prestige: This one gives you the panoramic sunroof.
- Platinum: The advanced safety net kicks in, with Level 2 ADAS and a 360-degree camera.
- Signature: The top-tier trim spoils you with ventilated seats and a digital key.
Take a look at what the Hyundai Alcazar’s trims have on offer:
Variant | Engine & Transmission | Key Additions | Best Suited For |
Executive | 1.5-Litre Petrol / Diesel MT | Six airbags, LED lighting, dual-zone AC, 17-inch alloys | Budget-conscious buyers |
Prestige | 1.5-Litre Petrol / Diesel MT | Panoramic sunroof, 10.25-inch displays, auto-dimming IRVM | Tech-focused families |
Platinum | 1.5-Litre Petrol / Diesel MT & AT | Level 2 ADAS, 18-inch alloys, 360-degree camera, Bose audio | Highway commuters |
Signature | 1.5-Litre Petrol / Diesel MT & AT | Ventilated second-row seats, digital key, driver seat memory | Premium comfort seekers |
The Essentials That You Don't Get
- No all-wheel-drive (AWD) option
- No diesel automatic option for lower trims
- No wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto
Deciding on the right Hyundai Alcazar variant comes down to whether you want a six or a seven seater, and a petrol or a diesel setup.
Best for Families: Platinum
For family hauling, the Platinum’s got everything. It comes with Level 2 ADAS, and you also get to choose between the six-seater and seven-seater layouts.
Best for Performance Lovers: Signature Petrol DCT
If you want to push that turbo-petrol engine’s 158 bhp to its limit, go for the Signature trim with the seven-speed DCT. It has paddle shifters for better control and ventilated seats across its first two rows.
Best Value Overall: Prestige
Strictly on a budget? The Prestige trim should be sufficient. The panoramic sunroof is there, along with wireless charging and the dual-screen setup.
The three-row SUV segment in India is a hot zone, where the Hyundai Alcazar finds itself battling heavyweights. The Mahindra XUV700 is one dominant rival, giving buyers powerful engines and an optional all-wheel-drive system. The Tata Safari, meanwhile, looks menacing on the road and is fitted with a better third row.
There are some other competitors like the MG Hector Plus and the Kia Carens. Take a look at how the Hyundai Alcazar holds its ground against such formidable alternatives.
| Model | Engine Options | Mileage (ARAI) | Key Value Proposition | Ex-Showroom Price Range |
| Hyundai Alcazar | 1.5-Litre Petrol / Diesel | 17.5–20.4 kmpl | Feature-rich cabin, refined engines | Rs. 14.99 – Rs. 21.55 Lakh |
| Mahindra XUV700 | 2.0-Litre Petrol / 2.2-Litre Diesel | 13–17 kmpl | Powerful engines, AWD option | Rs. 13.99 – Rs. 26.99 Lakh |
| Tata Safari | 2.0-Litre Diesel | 14.1–16.3 kmpl | Imposing design, spacious third row | Rs. 15.49 – Rs. 27.34 Lakh |
| MG Hector Plus | 1.5-Litre Petrol / 2.0-Litre Diesel | 12.3–15.5 kmpl | Tech-heavy interior, ride comfort | Rs. 17.30 – Rs. 23.08 Lakh |
| Kia Carens | 1.5-Litre Petrol / Diesel | 15.7–21.3 kmpl | Practical space, aggressive pricing | Rs. 10.52 – Rs. 19.94 Lakh |
Which Three-Row SUV Should You Choose?
- Choose the Hyundai Alcazar if you want a refined, tech-loaded cabin and no hiccups during urban driving.
- Choose the Mahindra XUV700 if you want an AWD system, besides its obvious engine performance.
- Choose the Tata Safari if you need six (captain) or seven seats along with a reliable engine.
- Choose the MG Hector Plus if ride comfort matters to you the most.
- Choose the Kia Carens if you want Alcazar-like practicality but cannot spend more.
Pros
- Refined 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and diesel engine options
- Feature-rich cabin containing Level 2 ADAS and dual displays
- Excellent ride comfort for both city and highway travel
- Ability to choose between versatile six-seater and seven-seater layouts
Cons
- Third-row seating is not enough for tall adults or long trips
- Boot capacity is not enough with all passengers on board
- Lacks a strong hybrid powertrain option in today’s market
Verdict
The Hyundai Alcazar is a practical car for buyers who desire a premium, feature-loaded family SUV. It has this versatile three-row layout that works well for both daily commutes and weekend road trips. Adding to its appeal are the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and diesel engines, assisted by Level 2 ADAS.
The third row draws criticism for its limited space, but it can still accommodate children. Luggage space also takes a hit if all three rows are occupied. But the SUV’s overall package justifies its asking price, because you get an upmarket cabin and a reliably soft suspension setup. Overall, if you want a six-seater or seven-seater that is easy to manoeuvre and has functional technology, you can bring the Hyundai Alcazar home.
Seshan concludes,
“In the past, buyers often stuck with the Creta because the Alcazar didn’t offer a vastly different experience. Now, with the significant upgrades to second-row comfort and the bolder styling, there is a genuine reason to upgrade.”
