Pros
- The 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine delivers similar performance in both petrol and CNG modes (110 bhp/200 Nm) with no drop in pulling power.
- Features a meaty mid-range which gives it adequate overtaking capabilities on highways.
- Under-the-boot-floor twin-cylinder CNG packaging gives you 270 litres of practical, flat boot space.
- Its suspension setup absorbs road imperfections, bumps, and broken tarmac with minimal harshness filtering into the cabin.
- The light steering and tight dimensions make it easy to drive through congested city spaces.
- It has a 6-speed manual gearbox which slots easily and has a reasonably light clutch pedal.
- Priced competitively when compared to their closest direct rival, the Tata Nexon iCNG.
Cons
- CNG variants miss out on an automatic gearbox option to compete with the Nexon iCNG AMT and Brezza CNG AT.
- Its luggage space feels cramped when compared to the standard petrol XUV 3XO’s 364-litre boot.
- The steering feels overly light at higher speeds.
- The CNG versions are spread across select mid-spec variants, so the entry-level and top-end versions miss out.
Verdict
The Mahindra XUV 3XO enters the CNG crossover space retaining the full 110 bhp/200 Nm punch from its 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine. It also benefits from 270 litres of usable boot space (CNG), offers a plush ride quality, and proper highway performance along with CNG running costs.
Seshan Vijayraghvan said in his review, “The Mahindra XUV 3XO ZNG makes a strong case for itself with its turbo-petrol-CNG setup, performance that closely matches the petrol version, a comfortable ride and a feature-rich cabin.”
What doesn’t work for the 3XO is the lack of an automatic transmission for the CNG version and the ultra-light steering that won't satisfy enthusiastic drivers on fast bends. Having said that, buyers who prefer a manual gearbox and need some turbo-petrol punch alongside CNG efficiency for lower fuel bills, the XUV 3XO makes for a compelling buy today.
