- The XUV 7XO also features reworked taillamps with L-shaped LEDs from the recently launched XEV 9S.

Expert Review on Mahindra XUV 7XO
car&bike Expert Take
“By updating the styling and adding more premium features to the already popular XUV700 platform, Mahindra has made the XUV 7XO more attractive. It offers incredibly powerful engines, a tech-heavy cabin, and a comfortable ride. It’s one of the most complete, value-driven family SUVs today.”
Following the naming strategy introduced with the smaller 3XO, Mahindra has updated its flagship three-row SUV and rebranded it as the XUV 7XO. This model is not a completely new vehicle from the ground up, but rather a heavy update to the existing XUV700.
The core appeal of the SUV remains the same. It targets large families who want a premium cabin, advanced safety features, and engines that do not struggle when the car is fully loaded. Mahindra has tweaked the exterior design a bit to make it look sharper and updated the interior software as well to fix earlier bugs. As a result, the 7XO has become a much more polished product.

Seshan Vijayraghvan did a detailed review of this car some time back, outlining what works in its favour and what doesn’t. His insights have found a place in this review, too.
Mahindra continues to offer two of the most punchy engines in this segment. Buyers can choose between a fast turbocharged petrol engine and a heavy-duty diesel unit.
Engine Specifications
| Engine | Power | Torque | Transmission | Drivetrain |
| 2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol | 200 bhp | 380 Nm | Six-Speed Manual / Six-Speed Automatic | Front-Wheel Drive |
| 2.2-Litre Turbo Diesel | 182 bhp | 420 Nm - 450 Nm | Six-Speed Manual / Six-Speed Automatic | Front-Wheel Drive / All-Wheel Drive |
Key Takeaways
- Both engines get a smooth six-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
- The AX7T diesel automatic and the AX7L have an optional All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system.
City Driving Experience
- The engines are well-refined and do not show any signs of stutter while on the move.
- The automatic gearbox shifts smoothly in the background.
- The petrol engine is extremely quiet at idle, keeping the cabin very peaceful.
- However, given the vehicle’s size, you have to be careful when navigating narrow city streets.
Highway Driving Experience
- Both engines allow for effortless overtakes on the highways, picking up speed rapidly.
- The diesel engine is very ideal for long-distance cruising.
- Wind and road noise are well-controlled, making it a great car for long family road trips.
- The diesel variant gets different driving modes (Zip, Zap, Zoom).
- They change how quickly the engine responds when you want to pass a slower vehicle.

Off-Roading Experience
- Mahindra provides an intelligent All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system for the AX7T diesel automatic and the AX7L.
- While it is not a hardcore off-roader with a low-range gearbox, the AWD system easily tackles slushy farm trails, snowy roads, and loose gravel.
Seshan points out,
“Under the hood, nothing has changed from the XUV700.”
The design keeps the bold proportions of the outgoing model, but also introduces sharper elements that tie it closely to Mahindra’s new global design language.
Dimensions Comparison
| Dimension | Mahindra XUV 7XO | Tata Safari | MG Hector Plus |
| Length | 4,695 mm | 4,668 mm | 4,720 mm |
| Width | 1,890 mm | 1,922 mm | 1,835 mm |
| Height | 1,755 mm | 1,795 mm | 1,760 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,750 mm | 2,741 mm | 2,750 mm |
| Kerb Weight | 1,775-2,040 kg | 1,825 kg | 1,675 kg |
| Ground Clearance | 200 mm | 205 mm | 192 mm |
Key Takeaways
- The 2,750 mm wheelbase is one of the longest in the segment.
- Its 1,890 mm width gives the SUV a very planted and aggressive stance.
- The 200 mm of ground clearance is highly practical for clearing large speed breakers.

Build Quality & Materials
Mahindra has worked on the overall fit and finish. The doors are heavy and shut firmly, confirming the strong structural build that helped its predecessor score highly in safety tests. The exterior paint quality is excellent, and the panel gaps are much more consistent than on older Mahindra vehicles.
The updates to the outside are subtle but effective, keeping the SUV looking fresh against newer rivals.
Front Profile
- The front has a revised grille with vertical slats and the twin-peaks Mahindra logo.
- It retains the massive C-shaped LED daytime running lights.
- The LED headlights provide excellent illumination for night driving.
Side Profile
- The side profile highlights the smart flush-fitting door handles
- They pop out automatically when you unlock the car.
- The car also rides on large 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels.
Rear Profile
- The older standalone arrow-shaped lamps have been abandoned for a new LED light bar.
- There are smoked honeycomb taillights in this section.
- A new integrated roof spoiler gives the rear a sporty touch.

The cabin is designed to feel like a premium luxury car. It relies on large screens and soft-touch materials to impress its buyers.
Cabin Layout and Quality
- There’s a massive coast-to-coast triple-screen setup that stretches across the dashboard.
- Mahindra uses soft-touch leatherette materials across the dashboard and door panels.
- However, the light-coloured upholstery used on the seats looks great in the showroom but requires constant cleaning to prevent dirt stains during daily use.

Seating Comfort
Front Row
- The front seats are large, highly supportive, and provide a commanding view.
- The driver gets electric seat adjustments with a memory function.
- When you open the door, the driver's seat automatically slides back.
Second Row
- Buyers can choose between a standard bench seat and individual captain seats here.
- The legroom and headroom are sufficient for tall adults.
- The seats recline nicely, and a large panoramic sunroof extends all the way to the back.

Third Row
- Access to the third row is decent, but you do have to climb slightly to get in.
- Space in the very back is tight. Adults will find their knees pointing upwards.
- The third row is best reserved for children or for short city trips.
Features That Improve Daily Use
- The three 12.3-inch screens up front
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- A premium Harman Kardon sound system
- Dual-zone automatic climate control
Mahindra has often played a very aggressive pricing game, and the XUV 7XO follows this trend. By offering different variants, it makes sure that there’s something in the car for every type of buyer.
| Variant | Engine & Transmission | Ex-Showroom Price |
| AX | 2.0-Litre Petrol / 2.2-Litre Diesel (Manual) | Rs. 13.66 - 14.96 Lakh |
| AX3 | 2.0-Litre Petrol / 2.2-Litre Diesel (Manual & Auto) | Rs. 16.02 - 17.47 Lakh |
| AX5 | 2.0-Litre Petrol / 2.2-Litre Diesel (Manual & Auto) | Rs. 17.52 - 19.44 Lakh |
| AX7 | 2.0-Litre Petrol / 2.2-Litre Diesel (Manual & Auto) | Rs. 18.48 - 20.40 Lakh |
| AX7T | 2.0-Litre Petrol / 2.2-Litre Diesel (Manual & Auto) | Rs. 20.99 - 23.44 Lakh |
| AX7L | 2.0-Litre Petrol / 2.2-Litre Diesel (Manual, Auto & AWD) | Rs. 22.47 - 24.92 Lakh |

Moving a heavy, large SUV requires a lot of fuel, especially if you opt for the high-performance petrol engine. Buyers looking to minimise running costs should strongly consider the diesel variants instead. The ARAI mileage sits somewhere between 13 and 17 kmpl, while all the powertrains run with a 60-litre fuel tank.
| Engine | ARAI Claimed Mileage | User-reported city mileage | User-reported highway mileage |
| 2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol (Auto) | 13.00 kmpl | 7-9 kmpl | 11-13 kmpl |
| 2.2-Litre Turbo Diesel (Manual) | 17.00 kmpl | 11-13 kmpl | 15-16 kmpl |
| 2.2-Litre Turbo Diesel (Auto) | 16.50 kmpl | 10-12 kmpl | 14-15 kmpl |
The XUV 7XO is engineered to protect large families with a highly comprehensive safety net, just like most of Mahindra’s other cars. It also boasts a five-star crash safety rating from Bharat NCAP.
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
- The core structure uses high-strength steel for the rigid safety cell.
- The top variants come equipped with up to seven airbags.
- It also features ISOFIX child seat anchors and three-point seatbelts for all passengers.
Active Safety and Stability Systems
- The vehicle gets an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), and Electronic Stability Program (ESP).
- The real highlight is the Level-2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) available on the top trims.
- This suite includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and a highly accurate traffic sign recognition system.
- There is also a 540-degree camera on the top trims that gives a complete view, along with an under-the-car view to dodge potholes.
The XUV 7XO’s cabin wows buyers with massive screens and smart connectivity features. Once inside, it feels like you’re in a premium European luxury car.
Infotainment and Interface
- The coast-to-coast 12.3-inch screen setup
- It operates on Mahindra’s advanced AdrenoX software.
- The system is highly responsive and supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- The digital driver’s display is highly customisable.
- It also features built-in Alexa integration.
Cabin Convenience and Practical Features
- The front seats have a much-needed ventilation function.
- A massive panoramic sunroof floods the cabin with natural light.
- The centre console includes a wireless charging pad.
- There are multiple USB Type-C fast-charging ports for rear passengers as well.
- The 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system fitted to this car delivers incredible audio quality.
Seshan speaks about the audio setup’s qualities,
“Simply put, it’s a treat for audiophiles.”

Like most three-row SUVs, the luggage capacity changes entirely depending on how many people are travelling.
- With all seven seats occupied, the 240-litre boot space is barely enough for two small bags.
- If you fold the third row down flat, it unlocks a massive 470 litres.
- You can also fold the second row down to turn the SUV into a cavernous transport vehicle.
Mahindra has specifically engineered the suspension to balance comfortable city driving with confident high-speed highway stability.
City Driving
- The steering wheel is incredibly light at low speeds.
- The DAVINCI suspension system softens over sharp bumps and deep city potholes.
- A high-definition 360-degree camera system makes navigating narrow lanes easier.
Highway Driving
- The heavy weight and wide stance keep the speeding vehicle planted at all times.
- The steering gradually weighs up as you drive faster, giving you a secure, connected feel.
- Body roll is well-controlled for a vehicle of this height, letting you pull fast corners.
Seshan notes,
“It’s manageable, but I would’ve liked tighter control.”

There are four different trims of the XUV 7XO in India right now.
Variant | Engine & Transmission | Key Additions | Best Suited For |
AX | 2.0-Litre Petrol / 2.2-Litre Diesel | 12.3-inch screens, basic safety features, six/seven seats | Budget-conscious buyers |
AX5 | 2.0-Litre Petrol / 2.2-Litre Diesel | Panoramic sunroof, alloy wheels | Buyers wanting essential luxury tech |
AX7 | 2.0-Litre Petrol / 2.2-Litre Diesel | Level 2 ADAS, six airbags, leatherette seats, seven seats | Safety-conscious families |
AX7L | 2.0-Litre Petrol / 2.2-Litre Diesel | Harman Kardon audio, 360-camera, ventilated seats, AWD option | Buyers who want zero compromises |
The Essentials That You Don’t Get
- Sliding second-row seats
- Auto-dimming inside rearview mirror on some trims
- A fully usable boot when all seven seats are occupied
With such a wide range of options, you can either go for the base AX trim or the top AX7L, but you’ll have to keep in mind your exact needs first.
Best on a Tight Budget: AX5
If you want the premium feel of the triple screens and the massive panoramic sunroof without paying top-tier prices, the AX5 variant is excellent. It offers the core XUV experience and looks nearly identical to the top-spec models from the outside.
Best Value Overall: AX7
The AX7 gives you the critical Level-2 ADAS safety suite and adds extra premium touches like leatherette upholstery and side airbags, making it the most sensible choice for a family vehicle.
Best for Luxury Enthusiasts: AX7L
If you want your SUV to rival premium European cars, the AX7L is the one. Features like the incredible audio system, ventilated seats, and the highly practical 360-degree camera make the price premium completely worth it.

The premium three-row SUV segment is fiercely competitive, with several distinct alternatives offering different strengths. The closest, most realistic rivals of this car are the Tata Safari, MG Hector Plus, and Hyundai Alcazar.
| Model | Powertrain | Key Value Proposition | Ex-Showroom Price |
| Mahindra XUV 7XO | 2.0-Litre Petrol / 2.2-Litre Diesel | Explosive performance, AWD option, tech-heavy cabin | Rs. 13.66 - 24.92 Lakh |
| Tata Safari | 2.0-Litre Diesel | Unmatched road presence, highly luxurious interior | Rs. 16.19 - 27.34 Lakh |
| MG Hector Plus | 1.5-Litre Petrol / 2.0-Litre Diesel | Plush ride quality, massive vertical touchscreen | Rs. 17.00 - 23.30 Lakh |
| Hyundai Alcazar | 1.5L Petrol / 1.5L Diesel | Highly refined engines, easy city drivability | Rs. 16.77 - 21.28 Lakh |
Which Premium Family SUV Should You Choose?
- Choose the Mahindra XUV 7XO if you want the most powerful engines in the segment and the choice of an All-Wheel Drive system.
- Choose the Tata Safari if you like imposing exterior styling and want the absolute most comfortable third-row seating.
- Choose the MG Hector Plus if you want a cloud-like ride quality and a highly digital, feature-packed interior.
- Choose the Hyundai Alcazar if you want a refined, easy-to-drive SUV with excellent fuel efficiency for daily city commutes.
Pros
- Performance of the turbo-petrol engine
- The 12.3-inch screen layout
- Level-2 ADAS and a strong physical structure
- The optional AWD system
Cons
- High running costs of the turbo-petrol engine
- The third row is congested for adults
- Boot space is almost negligible with all three rows up
- Light-coloured interior upholstery gets dirty
Verdict
The Mahindra XUV 7XO does not try anything new. It still sticks to being what most of Mahindra's SUVs are, i.e., highly competent and feature-rich. The cabin technology feels incredibly modern, the safety features are top-notch, and the power from both the petrol and diesel engines feels exciting.
However, you do have to accept the tight third row and the petrol variant's heavy fuel consumption. Even then, these are small compromises for the car's overall value. Whether you are handling daily city traffic or heading out on a cross-country road trip, the XUV 7XO remains an exceptionally well-rounded SUV.
Seshan sums this up about the car,
“Step back and look at the overall package, and the 7XO delivers strong value. It’s one of the most compelling midsize SUVs you can buy today.”
