If you won't be driving it for a time, do you still need to stick to a maintenance schedule? Yes, it is true! Follow these six basic tips to keep a vehicle in good shape.

Anyone who buys a new or used car intends to get the most mileage out of it. This includes, among other things, keeping it in drivable condition for as long as possible, or at the very least until they can upgrade to a car with more features and capabilities. However, many car owners simply do not perform the preventive auto maintenance required to extend the life of their vehicle, resulting in major mechanical issues that could have been prevented.

Follow these six basic tips to keep a vehicle in good shape.

1. Check the Owner Manual:

The user manual is the first and most important resource you should consult before implementing recommendations. You'll find item-by-item information about your vehicle here. If you can't find a paper copy of this handbook, go online and look for it on your manufacturer's website. Security, child safety, keys and remote control, specs, gasoline and refilling, driving aid, car care, and much more are likely to be found in the user handbook. If you want to understand more about your car, treat the user handbook like a bible. You might be shocked to hear that many of your difficulties, such as changing a flat tyre, unlocking a locked door, or even installing a baby seat, can be resolved by consulting the owner's manual.

2. Check the Air Pressure in the Tires

This is an issue whose significance is sometimes overlooked. Tires that are underinflated wear out faster than those that are properly inflated. Tire pressure is another factor that affects gas mileage. However, you must ensure that your tyres are not overinflated since this raises the possibility of a blowout, which you do not want to encounter when driving at 70 mph down the highway. You must pump your tyres according to the manufacturer's recommendations. As a result, inspecting your tyres once a month—or even sooner if you drive in very difficult conditions—is a good idea. A tyre pressure gauge can also be purchased to provide more precise information about what's going on inside your wheels.

3. Oil should be changed on a regular basis

A car has thousands of moving parts that must be greased in order to function properly. The engine is the most important component that requires proper lubrication in order to perform properly. The engine oil becomes contaminated over time, and wear and tear accelerates. Oil changes at the appropriate intervals will keep the car running smoothly for years.

4. Wash the Car

If possible, wash the car once a week. To remove dirt and road salt, wash the body and, if necessary, hose off the fender wells and undercarriage. After the water beads have expanded to the size of a quarter, it's time to wax the finish.

5. Keep the Interiors Clean

It is not necessary to have your car washed every two days. Keeping the inside dust-free with a simple vacuum cleaner might also be beneficial. Many innovative cleaning products are now available on the market. For example, a blob of scented slime can be used to clean hard-to-reach areas like air vents, the base of a gear stick, or the space beneath the steering wheel.

6. Perform Battery Maintenance

Using the owner's manual and, if necessary, the internet, learn the fundamentals of automotive battery maintenance. You should be aware of the location of your car's battery. After that, you must know how to properly separate the battery and clean the terminal contacts as needed. Remember to detach the battery's negative terminal first. This will effectively turn off the power and lessen the likelihood of an accident. Reconnect the battery after cleaning the connections with a brush that is safe to use on batteries. This time, connect the positive first. Cleaning the battery every now and then will help it last longer.
