Key Highlights
- The clutch is responsible for engaging and disengaging power transmission
- A car clutch, if well-maintained, can live up to 240,000 km.
- Repairing a clutch can take up to $2,500, depending on the car itself.
One of the major parts of power transmission is called the clutch. The clutch performs an important task of power dissipation in the car. Without proper clutch and brake or clutch and accelerator coordination, the car tends to jerk a lot. People tend to make some major habits unknowingly, which destroys the clutch. It is important to look out for signs and think about how to avoid such failures.

What kills the clutch?
- Not putting the car in neutral at a traffic light: Keeping the gear engaged when the car is not moving can lead to the clutch wearing out. The best thing to do is to keep the car neutral. If on a slope, apply the brakes or the parking brake.
- Keeping the hand on the gear lever: Some drivers have this habit of resting their hands on the gear for long periods. The problem is that it puts excessive pressure on the gear and destroys the clutch. It is advised to keep the hand on the gear only when it needs to be changed.

- Mismatched gear and speed: Moving at a slow speed while a higher gear is engaged puts pressure on the engine. That is problematic for the gear.
- Changing the gears slowly: This happens to new drivers sometimes when they change the gear slowly, which engages the clutch pedal for a longer period. It is advisable to change the gear quickly.
- Harsh driving: Speed is thrilling, but that can kill the clutch system. Engaging the clutch system and then racing at high speeds destroys the clutch. The driver might even need to get the whole clutch system changed!
- Resting the foot: The practice of resting the foot on the clutch pedal leads to the gears wearing out. It is advised that the pedal be pushed only when a gear change is necessary.

Symptoms of a worn-out clutch system
The car shows various signs that the clutch system is facing some major issues. Those include:
- Slippery clutch: One of the most common phenomena is slipping clutch. The clutch tends to lag when it's worn out. The speed might rise more than required in this case. The clutch pedal might be hard to press because of mechanical failure.
- Gear shift problems: If the driver finds it hard to change the gears, then it's a sign that the clutch system has worn out.
- Chirping noise: The car tends to make chirping noises when the clutch has worn out.
- Shuddering: If fluids like oil, grease, or water tend to accumulate inside the car, the engine starts to shudder when the gear is being changed. This can be a sign of a damaged clutch system.
A proper functioning clutch is extremely pivotal for ensuring the seamless working of a vehicle in different terrains. Hence, proper care must be paid to its maintenance.
