Mahindra Dabbling in Driverless Cars?

When companies across the world are dabbling in driverless cars, why should India be far behind? If reports are to be believed, Mahindra, the home-grown utility vehicle maker, is set to join the continuously growing list of companies that continue to explore the world of driverless cars; companies like Google, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi, among others.
The company's electric car-making subsidiary, Mahindra Reva, has already initiated R&D in their Bengaluru facility in Bengaluru, and hopes to begin testing these cars once requisite approvals are obtained. Though the relevant software for the car will be developed in India, the on-road testing will happen elsewhere. The company intends to further this endeavour by analysing the data collected from its electric cars already plying on Indian roads.
That said, it will still take Mahindra at least 4 years to develop a production-ready car.
Companies across the globe have taken on the challenge of driverless/ self-driving cars with much enthusiasm. From reports of Apple joining the league, to NASA working with Nissan on driverless cars, it is quite amazing to see how the eagerness. Now, we wait for the day driverless cars find their way on our roads as not mere experiments, but as regular means of transport.
