car&bike Expert Take

“For those who want an unmatched chauffeur-driven experience, the Toyota Vellfire stands out. It redefines rear-seat

comfort with its executive-level lounge seating, while its exterior boasts massive road presence. As an attractive alternative to luxury sedans, this premium minivan is surprisingly efficient despite its size.”

The Toyota Vellfire is a flagship offering built on the brand's global TNGA-K platform. Launched in India as a high-end luxury MPV, it is about five metres long and is designed to transport people in absolute comfort. It arrives in India as a completely built unit (CBU) and is available in two major trims.
Car&bike’s Assistant Editor Bilal Firfiray did an extensive review of this minivan, and you can check out the video on our YouTube channel. Bilal also wrote a review about it, which is available on our website, and Jafar Rizvi, meanwhile, analysed how it stands against its closest competitor, the MG M9. We have compiled all their opinions and attested them throughout this article as well.
Meanwhile, the Vellfire’s fourth-generation model, released in 2023, brought many upgrades over its predecessor. It now has a massive chrome grille enhanced with sleek LED lighting. The interiors focus on hospitality, paying extra attention to the second row. This has become the go-to car in metros for corporate leaders and large families who value space as much as premium features.

As Bilal simplifies,

“Forget everything you thought you knew about the ultimate luxurious and practical car. Because today, the car that’s rewriting the books of presence, practicality and comfort with a dash of luxury and premiumness isn’t a German Luxo-barge. It’s this, the all-new Toyota Vellfire.”

The Toyota Vellfire puts its all into passenger comfort, but performance-wise, it's not a vehicle that other competitors can push around. We acknowledge its hybrid system for the added reliability, which puts a petrol engine with two electric motors in one setup, letting the magic happen. This configuration is a boon for the car's efficiency. It allows drivers to lean on electric power when they don't want to engage the gas too much. The delivery here does not compromise; there are no hiccups when you keep raising the speed.
Bilal notes,
“This is not the car you would be boasting the 0-to-100 kmph time in. This is a car you drive sedately. This car wants to be driven sedately, and you would be doing that with all the seats filled in.”

Driving Experience: Real World

As far as the driving experience goes, the Vellfire is all about being relaxed.

City Driving:

In the city, the electric motor comes in handy, offering an emission-free ride. The steering's nice and light; no trouble at all navigating through the streets, and the e-CVT transmission makes driving feel smooth and seamless. The best part is that the jarring movements you sometimes get in other vehicles are not found in the Toyota Vellfire.

Highway Driving

Out on the open road, the petrol engine manages some pretty respectable speeds for the Vellfire. But, we would advise against constantly trying to overtake at high speeds; it's just not the Vellfire's strong point. On the flip side, the suspension is spot on at handling all the bumps and knocks the road throws at it, so the cabin stays nice and solid.
According to Bilal,
“Sure, the engine can be heard and felt with a slight bit of vibrations inside the cabin, especially because you are switching from an EV mode with absolutely no vibrations to a little bit. Not that the engine is unrefined.”

This minivan exists to please high-net-worth-individuals. While being boxy by design, Toyota infused it with sharp elements to give it a unique road presence. Sure, the vehicle looks massive both in proximity and from a distance, but its tall stance is what makes it stand out. Toyota understands the 'why' behind the design clearly here. It's a subtle decision taken to give buyers more headroom inside.

The latest generation has taken to the TNGA-K platform. This luxury minivan is lighter than before, but its structural integrity has not diminished. We also noticed it looks a bit like the Lexus LM, but the Vellfire looks more dominant. Take a look at how the MPV counters its rivals on footprint.

We noticed how bold the Toyota Vellfire is. It cleverly uses details to break up its large, flat surfaces and visual mass.

Front Profile

The minivan’s front gets a massive chrome grille that reaches down to the lower bumper’s lip. This shield-like structure is flanked by multi-part LED headlamps, which make the MPV look like a predator in the rearview mirror of those ahead.

Side Profile

On the side, a Z-shaped character line runs below the window. This brings some visual appeal to the otherwise slab-sided profile. We also noticed that the glasshouse makes it easy for passengers to enjoy the outside scenery, while its large, sliding doors act as the vehicle’s central functional element. Finally, 19-inch alloy wheels complete the overall look from this angle.

Rear Profile

The upright flat tailgate is an intentional design choice from Toyota; they want to provide as much headroom as possible for the third-row passengers. Other styling elements that caught our eye are the sharp tail lamp clusters, connected by an LED light bar. As for the rear wiper, it does not stand out like a sore thumb; Toyota has tucked it neatly beneath the roof spoiler.
Bilal observes,
“When this arrives, people don’t look for who is behind the wheel. They simply know that an important person is sitting at the back. It's not just big, it's HUGE.”

The Toyota Vellfire offers buyers a first-class airline experience, with the Japanese manufacturer clearly making efforts for its rear-seat passengers.

Cabin Layout and Quality

The dashboard is minimal and nothing gimmicky. It has a 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and the materials used here are high-quality plastics. As for the cabin, it enjoys soft-touch leather and wood inserts. We also noted that there are not many physical buttons inside the Toyota Vellfire.

Seating and Comfort

As a seven-seater MPV, the Toyota Vellfire wins this round, giving full justification to its premium price.

Front Row

Due to the vehicle’s tall build, the driver gets a full view of the road ahead. There are also power-adjustable seats with heating and ventilation, ensuring the one in the driver’s seat does not get to complain about the MPV’s shortcomings.

Second Row

The second row justifies the Toyota Vellfire’s engineering decisions. It is stacked with two individual executive lounge seats, and they are not just there for luxury illusion; you further enjoy power-extendable Ottomans, a built-in massage function, and aviation-style fold-out tables in their presence.
According to Bilal,
“And it's not just the sheer number of features on offer here; instead, it’s the way the second row is made to offer the best comfort and working space for our hotshot sitting here. You can attend Zoom calls over here, do presentations, catch up on emails, or relax after a long day at the office. Most of it is possible in an S-Class or a 7 Series. But over here, it does feel special.”

Third Row

Among many seven-seaters, we can say that the Vellfire’s third row is spacious enough to fit in two tall adults. When you need to transport luggage in this section instead, no problem; the seats fold up sideways against the glass.

Features That Improve Daily Use

These are the most practical features of the Toyota Vellfire’s interior according to our tests:

  • Detachable smartphone-style remote controls for the second row
  • Power-operated sunblinds give you complete privacy
  • A roof-mounted climate control panel with customisable ambient lighting
  • The punchy 15-speaker JBL premium audio system
Dual sunroof setup with independent shades

The Toyota Vellfire is a pricey vehicle since it’s a Completely Built Unit (CBU). But the Japanese manufacturer did not confuse potential buyers with many options in retail. It kept the Vellfire’s lineup simple in the Indian market with the ‘Hi’ and the ‘VIP Executive Lounge’. This premium minivan knows its place, sticking to the upper echelons of the luxury vehicle market, proudly competing with premium MPVs and also challenging flagship SUVs and sedans.
If you’re browsing this unit, expect the entry price point for the ‘Hi’ to be Rs. 1.20 crore. The ‘VIP Executive Lounge’ demands more than that, starting from Rs. 1.30 crore. All in all, you are paying for a vehicle with an uncompromised rear-seat experience, advanced hybrid technology, and Toyota’s famous reliability prestige. One might ask, why does the VIP variant cost Rs. 10.00 lakh more? The answer is larger Ottoman seats, the 14-inch rear entertainment screen, and a more refined luxury package. Take a look at the two variants below and their exclusive showroom prices.

Most luxury-end vehicles struggle with mileage, but since the Toyota Vellfire does not prioritise supercar-level performance, we found its mileage efficiency pretty convenient. And this has been made more possible with the self-charging petrol-hybrid powertrain, a workhorse that lets you switch comfortably between the electric motors and the internal combustion engine.
Toyota claims the minivan can deliver 19.28 kmpl, and we all know ARAI numbers come from supervised tests. However, real-world mileage does not change, either. In cities, expect to get around 16 kmpl (a nod to the electric motors) from this vehicle. Out on the highways, the petrol engine delivered 18 kmpl in our test drive, surprisingly a number that comes close to the manufacturer’s claims.
Bilal notes,
“You get the familiar 2.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor and an eCVT. The batteries are charged up on the move, and you can practically spend more time on the road while in EV mode, using little to no fuel.”
Check out the Toyota Vellfire’s fuel efficiency that we registered across different driving conditions.

Built on Toyota's New Global Architecture platform, the Vellfire has a rock-solid body designed to absorb bone-crushing impact in the event of a crash. This solid foundation is its first line of defence, and from there, the safety systems kick in to supervise things and prevent accidents before they happen.

Passive Safety & Crash Protection

All sorts of safety equipment are in place to prevent injury in the case of an accident. The Toyota Vellfire comes with six SRS airbags to protect all passengers, along with seats designed to reduce injuries. Children, meanwhile, benefit from the presence of ISOFIX mounts at the back.

Active Safety & Stability Systems in the Toyota Vellfire

Toyota Safety Sense is the brains behind the Vellfire's safety, and it includes a whole host of driver assistance systems like a pre-collision system, cruise control that adapts to the road, and the infamous Lane Keep Assist. With Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management in charge, this is a car that can handle its size and weight with ease, even when the road gets a bit tricky. To help the driver stay alert, there's also a panoramic view monitor to keep an eye on what's behind, and a low-pressure warning system to let you know if tyre pressure is getting low.

Most vehicles focus on meeting the driver’s expectations, but the Toyota Vellfire’s technology and features seek approval from the rear-seat passengers.

Infotainment and Interface

The dashboard has a huge 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You can conveniently browse through its menus. The minivan’s audio duties, meanwhile, are shouldered by the premium 15-speaker JBL sound system, and for additional entertainment, Toyota has installed a 14-inch roof screen for media streaming.

Cabin Convenience and Practical Tech

The second-row captain seats have detachable smartphone-like remote controls, so you don’t have to reach over every time to apply a specific function. These remotes handle several elements with ease, from multizone climate control to ambient lighting. As if these features are not enough, the MPV also get a dual moonroof setup with independent sunshades.

A luxury people mover depends on flexible cargo management to be called a reliable transporter. The Toyota Vellfire knows and adapts with its rear section. When all three rows are occupied, the luggage compartment first offers space for two small cabin bags. If this isn’t enough, the third-row passengers can slide their seats forward to open up more space (they are mounted on rails). And if this isn’t enough either, the third-row seats can split 50:50 and fold up against the side windows. You are left in command of an enormous cavern capable of handling large suitcases and golf bags.
The following pointers summarise how efficient the Toyota Vellfire’s bootspace is:

  • A power-operated tailgate with memory function for easy access in tight parking spaces.
  • The side-folding third-row seats gobble up bulky items.
  • The concealed underfloor storage compartment is built for more valuable equipment.
  • During the night, an LED boot lamp illuminates the cargo area.

The vehicle’s road manners have reached a new high after it transitioned to the TNGA-K platform. Now, the suspension setup does not allow road imperfections to disturb the cabin, ensuring that its passengers have very little to complain about. There is also the underrated pitch-and-bounce control, mitigating the typical wallow associated with large vans.
Inside the city, we found the steering quite easy to handle, but we had to be extra cautious while cutting through city streets and narrow corners. Out on the highway, the MPV did not feel like it was struggling against the wind, and it needed no constant steering corrections either. The passengers at the back get to enjoy a whisper-quiet cabin environment even at triple-digit speeds.

Bilal mentions,
“Toyota isn't rewriting the laws of physics with this one, right? And that's understandable. What you'd need instead is an experienced chauffeur. That would solve most of your problems here.”

Bilal further added,

“It also needs to be pointed out that once you hit the highway speeds, it does manage to do a proper road trip. You have to clock that triple-digit speed sedately; it won't race towards it, but once it does that, it will easily hold that highway speed, and you can easily do cross-country touring without any trouble.”
This is how we summed up the Toyota Vellfire’s ride and handling experience:

  • The adaptive suspension system actively absorbs bumps and uneven tarmac.
  • The light steering feel reduces driver fatigue during slow city commutes.
  • The tall build gives a strong, straight-line stability for cross-country driving.
  • The cabin handles noise, vibration, and harshness exceptionally well.

There are only two Toyota Vellfire variants in India right now. They both come with the 2.5-litre strong hybrid powertrain, offering the same performance and fuel economy. But what actually makes one variant unique from the other is the interior layout and the level of bespoke luxury offered. The Toyota Vellfire Hi variant sits at the base level, generously loaded with modern amenities, premium upholstery, and advanced safety systems. But the Toyota Vellfire VIP Executive Lounge is the more exclusive sibling to catch. It has individual captain seats in its second row with better massaging functions, fold-out tables, and an exclusive rear-seat entertainment package.

Since both variants of the Toyota Vellfire are pretty much the same in design and convenience, choosing one ahead of the other depends on how the owner wants to tweak their level of indulgence.

Best for City Driving and Family Luxury: Hi Trim

This one’s enough if the end goal is to yield premium family travel. Passenger comfort is paramount, ride quality is seamless, and dense traffic conditions cannot hold it back from letting its owners enjoy the ride back home from a long picnic.

Best for Highway Sprints and Executive Travel: VIP

Executive Lounge

The VIP Executive Lounge variant is very corporate-like; think of individuals who prefer to spend all their time in the second row. We were thrilled by the variant’s first-class airline comfort, appreciating how it handles your mood during long, high-speed highway runs.

There is only one true competitor to the Toyota Vellfire: its corporate sibling, the Lexus LM. It has the same platform, but there are some subtle touches to the LM that take its price tag to an entirely different level. But if we look beyond dedicated MPVs, the competition grows with luxury SUVs like the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS.
Note: None of the mentioned vehicles strictly comes under the same price bracket. But we still mentioned them because they all belong to the end-tier luxury segment, with the same seating practicality that executive Indian families look for.

  • The 2.5-Litre strong hybrid petrol powertrain is efficient
  • The ride quality ensures you don’t have to worry about bumps
  • Active safety features and advanced driver assistance systems
  • A significant road presence that intimidates other vehicles

Cons

  • The pricing strategy makes it inaccessible to many people
  • No diesel options means loss of niche customers
  • Parking can sometimes be challenging due to its design
  • The front-end styling may not appeal to all

Verdict

If passenger comfort is what you value most, the Toyota Vellfire stands apart from its competition. The Japanese manufacturer makes no bold claims about its driving mechanics; the vehicle’s engineering intent openly admits it exists in the market as a chauffeur-driven mobile office. Even luxury sedans do not give the rear-seat experience that the Vellfire provides with its enormous cabin, individual climate zones, and massage functions.

However, some may say the minivan’s proportions are impractical for city driving, while a few may question its pricing. The Toyota Vellfire, therefore, does not attempt to please every buyer either. It stays inside a niche category, attracting India’s high-net-worth individuals who want something else for a seven-seater compared to traditional luxury sedans.

Billal concludes,

“The all-new Toyota Vellfire is not just a car for the boss. It’s the car that proves you are the boss. No wonder that apart from the big fat cats and politicians, even celebrities and sports personalities also love to own one. For the people, the car you arrive in says a lot. This Vellfire doesn't shout and say: I’ve arrived. It simply whispers it.”
