car&bike Expert Take
“The Citroen eC3 is a practical electric hatchback. Although it misses out on some premium features and rapid charging capabilities, its spacious cabin and solid ride quality make up for those shortcomings. The car’s price tag is approachable as well.”

It’s been three years since the Citroen eC3 arrived in the Indian market, fully loaded with French styling and comfort within the affordable EV space. This one follows its petrol-powered sibling's market approach by keeping a high ground clearance and a crossover-like stance, replete with quirky design elements.
Over time, the manufacturer has made some further changes to this car, such as the 2025 variant introducing the accessible Live variant for a wider audience, including fleet operators. It’s upright, urban-centric, and has a balanced ride quality. While rivals lean towards flashy tech to stand out, the eC3 keeps most of the core stuff simple, running on a 29.2 kWh air-cooled battery pack.
Shams Raza Naqvi, Senior Editor at car&bike, had covered this vehicle’s launch, available features, real-world characteristics, and market relevance against some current competitors within the EV segment. To give this review a more authoritative stance, we have taken some of his opinions about the car and added them here.

The mechanical setup of this French EV focuses on predictable city commuting. It feels entirely geared toward an easy-going driving style, rather than outright speed.
Engine Specifications
| Engine & Transmission | Max Power | Max Torque | Drivetrain |
| 29.2 kWh Air-Cooled Battery, Single Electric Motor | 56 bhp | 143 Nm | Front-wheel drive, Single-speed automatic |
Driving Experience: Real World
Since the motor has a relaxed nature, it would be misleading to expect triple-digit speeds from this car.
City Driving
The eC3’s mechanical setup shines brightest in urban environments. A single-speed automatic transmission makes city traffic bearable, while the instant torque means you can easily close gaps at low speeds.
Throttle response also picks up the pace every time you cross the 30 kmph mark, but gently, so that the car does not push you back into your seat. The Eco mode particularly dials back the response slightly to preserve the battery, but this difference is barely noticeable during regular driving.
Shams observes,
"These numbers suit city conditions well, especially since you get all that torque right from the get-go."
Highway Driving
Take the eC3 out on the highway, and its limitations become noticeable at once. The 107 kmph top speed means you will stay in the middle lanes mostly.
The electric motor cannot keep up at higher speeds, and because of this, overtaking requires some planning. This clear lack of punch above 80 kmph is hard to ignore; its best cruising speed is somewhere around 70 kmph.
Shams aptly puts it,
“The eC3’s numbers are fine for city traffic, though you might feel left wanting more on the highway.”

The design language is unmistakably Citroen, borrowing heavily from the petrol C3. There is a high-riding stance, roof rails, and chunky cladding in this car, giving it a crossover-like appeal. Although it looks tough enough to handle bad roads, it also remains compact enough to squeeze through tight city spaces. Meanwhile, the quirky Chevron logo and daytime running lights ensure it has a unique face.

Citroen offers a wide range of customisation. You can choose multiple dual-tone paint schemes and exterior packs. A noticeable visual difference is the charging port on the right front fender, and the lack of an exhaust pipe is another major giveaway of its electric nature.
Dimensions Comparison
| Dimension | Citroen eC3 | Tata Tiago EV | MG Comet EV |
| Length | 3,981 mm | 3,769 mm | 2,974 mm |
| Width | 1,733 mm | 1,677 mm | 1,505 mm |
| Height | 1,604 mm | 1,536 mm | 1,640 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,540 mm | 2,400 mm | 2,010 mm |
A wheelbase longer than that of the Tata Tiago EV and the MG Comet EV means that the Citroen eC3 has a more spacious cabin. That space is further supported by the fact that the car is also wider than the other two.
Despite being on the market for a few years, the exterior holds up well. It balances a fun attitude with practical ground clearance.
Front Profile
- The split headlamp design remains a key highlight, framing the classic Citroen logo.
- Halogen headlamps are standard, though the LED daytime running lights add a bit of a modern touch.
- A faux skid plate on the lower bumper adds to the tough, SUV-like posture.
Side Profile
- The 2,540 mm wheelbase is quite generous for a car of this size.
- Thick black cladding wraps around the wheel arches, protecting the paint from minor scrapes.
- Body-coloured or contrast-painted outside mirrors mix up the flair around the side profile.
Rear Profile
- The rear end is kept simple and clean, with wrap-around halogen tail lamps.
- A subtle roof spoiler and a robust rear bumper lend some appeal to the sporty theme.
- There is no fake exhaust in this car; Citroen has decided to keep the design honest and sorted.

The cabin is built in such a way that space and sensible ergonomics stand out the most. The overall layout inside this car is clean and pleasantly uncluttered.
Cabin Layout and Quality
The dashboard has an interesting dimpled texture, often accompanied by a brightly coloured contrast panel. Hard plastics are used a lot inside to keep overall costs in check, but fit and finish aren’t things we found ourselves complaining about; they are acceptable for the price bracket.
Meanwhile, the gear selector is a neat little toggle switch on the centre console, and this simple design element gives up a lot of visual space. The digital instrument cluster now shows battery-specific data, but honestly, it’s a bit basic in its readouts.
Seating Comfort
Comfort has always been a French speciality, and the eC3 does not disappoint, offering some highly supportive seats.
Front Row
The front seats are wide and have good lateral support, and the driving position is high enough, thanks to the seat’s position. A large glass area lets you see outside the car from all angles. Headroom and legroom are generous as well, so tall drivers do not have to worry about adjusting to the cockpit.
Second Row
At the back, there is a lot of space available. As we’ve already mentioned, the long wheelbase opens up excellent knee room, and a flat floor further helps when seating three across. However, a few things are worth pointing out here: one, the seatback is slightly upright, and two, there are no adjustable headrests at the rear. This part is visibly where Citroen did the cost-cutting.
Features That Improve Daily Use
- A slick 10.2-inch capacitive touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Manual air conditioning, which works well enough but feels basic compared to rivals.
- Steering-mounted audio controls for easy and quick access.
- A digital driver's display showing range and battery status.
- Connected car tech functionality via the MyCitroen app.

Citroen has positioned this EV aggressively in the market, clearly trying to undercut premium hatchbacks while being generous with more space than entry-level electric cars. The Live variant has also made things more interesting, and now, it challenges the Tata Tiago EV, while being cheaper than Tata’s other sibling, the Punch EV.

Ex-Showroom Prices (India)
| Variant | Powertrain | Ex-Showroom Price Range |
| eC3 Live | 29.2 kWh Battery, Automatic | Rs. 11.50 Lakh |
| eC3 Feel / Feel DT | 29.2 kWh Battery, Automatic | Rs. 12.90 Lakh |
| eC3 Shine | 29.2 kWh Battery, Automatic | Rs. 13.26 Lakh |
| eC3 Shine DT | 29.2 kWh Battery, Automatic | Rs. 13.41 Lakh |
| eC3 Shine Vibe Pack DT | 29.2 kWh Battery, Automatic | Rs. 13.53 Lakh |
Electric vehicles think about running costs and range a lot; this is one of the main reasons they matter in the market. The eC3’s battery size is practical enough in its segment, with an ARAI-claimed range of 320 km on a single charge.
During our tests, the battery pack helped us complete a week of moderate city commuting. With mixed driving, the range dropped to somewhere around 220 km, and constant stop-and-go traffic pulled that number further down to 200 km.
Shams mentions,
"A big talking point is the battery, which is air-cooled rather than liquid-cooled."
Observed Fuel Efficiency During Testing
| Powertrain | ARAI-Claimed Range | City Range (Real-World) | Highway Range (Real-World) |
| 29.2 kWh Battery | 320 km | 220–240 km | 190–210 km |
Note: Regular fast-charging sessions on hot summer days will slow down the charging rate. Still, normal home charging via a 15-amp plug takes around 10.5 hours to top up entirely, so we think overnight charging is the best way to go about powering up this vehicle.
Safety in a car is often talked about in India’s automotive market, considering how Indians are growing more conscious about a vehicle’s structural integrity. Honestly, the eC3’s safety record is a tough reality to digest.
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
The 2023 model scored a disappointing zero stars in the Global NCAP crash tests for adults. It also scored a mere one star for child occupant protection. While the structure is stable enough for regular city bumps, it does not have advanced protection. Dual front airbags are there, but no side or curtain airbags. The car did get its latest update in 2025, but that has not been tested out yet. We aren’t expecting any miracles here, either.
Active Safety and Stability Systems
On the active safety front, the car covers some basic requirements. Anti-lock Braking System with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution is standard; important features that help you stay out of trouble under hard braking. Reverse parking sensors are also available for moving through tight city spots, and higher variants additionally offer a rear-view camera. However, it misses out completely on Electronic Stability Control and hill-hold assist, crucial features for a heavy electric vehicle on steep inclines. Overall, this car does not feature ADAS.
Safety Verdict
A basic safety net covers the Citroen eC3. It isn’t obviously going to be your choice of vehicle if you care deeply about modern electronic aids and strong crash test ratings.

The cabin layout mostly mirrors its petrol sibling, but the interface does get some specific electric updates to keep the driver informed.
Infotainment and Interface
- There is a 10.2-inch touchscreen display serving as the car’s central hub for all required information.
- It also brings wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, letting you connect devices seamlessly.
- The system is bright and responds quickly to touch inputs; there is no lag.
- It bundles 35 connected car features for remote monitoring.
Shams notes,
“The display has changed to show EV-specific information, such as the state of charge, remaining battery, driving modes, and how the regenerative braking is working.”
Cabin Convenience and Practical Features
- The traditional gear lever is gone in this variant, as expected, since it’s an EV.
- Small storage spaces are plentiful across the interior.
- But it misses out on a few basic comfort features like automatic climate control and electrically adjustable outside mirrors, which could have been given at this price.
Shams mentions,
“For the first time, you see an automatic toggle on the C3, which reminds you of the brand’s bigger SUVs, a nice design element there.”

The French hatchback offers 315 litres of boot space, which can fit in a weekend's worth of luggage for a small family. Most converted electric cars lose boot volume to battery packaging, but the Citroen smartly keeps its deep loading bay. You can comfortably fit two medium-sized suitcases alongside a few soft bags into that space. And more importantly, you also get a spare wheel hidden beneath the floor, not disturbing the boot space by even one inch. That alone brings great peace of mind on Indian roads.

The manufacturer is famous for its pliant suspension setups, and this electric version respects that history, but the physical reality of battery weight somewhat changes the experience a bit. The 29.2 kWh air-cooled battery pack adds roughly 300 kg over the petrol model, and the ground clearance also drops by 10 mm.
City Driving
Urban environments are where this vehicle makes the most sense. The car feels quick on its feet, and pushing the Eco mode button changes the throttle response so that it can stretch the driving range. The steering is light and makes parking easy, while the upgraded brakes handle the extra mass well. The regenerative braking is predictable as well.
Highway Driving
Out on the open road, even though the hatchback feels composed, it’s not meant to lead the segment here. A top speed of 107 kmph is too low. While it cruises comfortably at 80 kmph, overtakes need careful planning, and the motor also starts choking near the top end. And around corners, the extra weight makes its presence felt.
Shams observes,
“We threw it around some fast corners on the track, and I’d say the petrol version still feels superior when it comes to pure handling.”
The electric hatchback has some trims that you can check out. These range from the bare-bones Live variant to the slightly more equipped Shine. Prices start at Rs. 11.61 lakh and go up to Rs. 13.56 lakh for the top-spec dual-tone packages (ex-showroom).
Variant | Key Additions | Ex-Showroom Price Range |
eC3 Live | Dual airbags, digital instrument cluster | Rs. 11.50 Lakh |
eC3 Feel / Feel DT | 10.2-inch touchscreen, four speakers | Rs. 12.90 Lakh |
eC3 Shine | Rear parking camera, alloy wheels | Rs. 13.26 Lakh |
eC3 Shine DT | 15-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, OVRM | Rs. 13.41 Lakh |
eC3 Shine Vibe Pack DT | Fast charging, rear wiper, rear camera | Rs. 13.53 Lakh |
The Essentials That You Don’t Get
- Automatic climate control
- Electrically folding outside mirrors
- Adjustable rear headrests
- Cruise control and advanced driver aids
The battery and motor specifications of this French hatchback are the same in all the available variants. This consistency means that buying one variant over the other will mostly be about the cabin features and aesthetic elements.
Best for Tight Budgets: eC3 Live
If you strictly need an electric runabout for short city errands and can live without fancy screens or extra speakers, the Live trim saves you serious money. It covers the bare minimum as the entry point.
Best Value for Money: eC3 Feel/Feel DT
This variant makes the most sense, feature-wise and economy-wise. It has an excellent 10.2-inch touchscreen and wireless smartphone connectivity, so you get the core technology without overpaying.
Best for Daily Convenience: Shine/Shine DT/Shine Vibe Pack DT
If a rear parking camera and alloy wheels matter to you, step up to the Shine. It finishes the car off nicely, though no automatic climate control still stings at this price point. Go for any of the Shine variants.
The entry-level electric space in India has become quite crowded over the years, so it’s no longer just about style or substance here. Buyers look beyond the shell, such as maximum range, clever features, and smart packaging.
The Tata Tiago EV is a solid, hardcore vehicle whose safety levels the Citroen eC3 cannot touch; it also begins from a lower price tag. The MG Comet EV is loaded with futuristic tech that will make you feel you’ve bought a car that will keep its interior standards relevant even for the next five to six years. Against them, the Citroen eC3 clearly wins on one front: it has much, much more battery range.
| Model | Battery Capacity | Claimed Range | Ex-Showroom Price Range |
| Citroen eC3 | 29.2 kWh | 320 km | Rs. 11.61 – Rs. 13.56 lakh |
| Tata Tiago EV | 19.2 kWh / 24 kWh | 250 km – 315 km | Rs. 7.99 – Rs. 11.14 lakh |
| MG Comet EV | 17.3 kWh | 230 km | Rs. 7.49 – Rs. 9.99 lakh |
Which Electric Hatchback Should You Choose?
- Choose the Citroen eC3 if you care about having a sorted suspension and a large 315-litre boot.
- Choose the Tata Tiago EV if you want a proven city car, one that has a punchier drive and better cabin features.
- Choose the MG Comet EV if you want an ultra-compact footprint and a futuristic cabin.
Pros
- Comfortable ride quality over broken city roads
- Practical 315-litre boot with a spare wheel
- Instant low-end torque for traffic overtakes
- Bright, responsive 10.2-inch touchscreen display
Cons
- The air-cooled battery may not suffice in summer
- Missing basics like automatic climate control
- Top speed is electronically limited to 107 kmph
- Handling feels heavy around tight corners
Verdict
The Citroen eC3 knows exactly what it wants to be. It does not chase any lap times, nor does it focus on winning any specification sheet battles. It’s a practical, comfortable, and economically sensible EV for city strolls, as the pliant suspension absorbs the worst of Indian roads with ease.
But, all modern expectations are not honestly met with this vehicle. For a car that costs over Rs. 13 lakh, there is no reason to exclude automatic climate control or tone down on highway performance. Yes, this vehicle is best suited for the city, and at the same time, requires tremendous patience on open stretches. If such shortcomings are still negligible to you, and you care more about the spacious cabin on offer, the Citroen eC3’s fuss-free nature and quiet charging capabilities deserve a spot at your doorstep.
Shams concludes about the car,
“The Citroen eC3 comes across as a reliable city car that offers a good amount of practicality and acceptable drivability. If you're looking for an affordable EV, and your options are currently limited, this could be a good bet.”
