The Mahindra Thar retains its recognizable boxy silhouette, reminiscent of its predecessor, but it also brings significant improvements in design. The rugged exterior is complemented by several modern touches, such as LED daytime running lights (DRLs) on the fenders, giving it a more urban lifestyle look. 

However, it stays true to its off-road DNA with exposed door hinges, large chunky bumpers, and rugged 18-inch wheels on the LX variants, while the AX models come with 16-inch wheels​.

The front grille, however, has caused some controversy among enthusiasts. Mahindra moved away from the seven-slot grille seen on earlier models due to legal reasons, opting for a new checkered pattern. While not universally loved, the grille does give the Thar a more distinct identity. 

Other design elements, such as the raised hood, split tailgate, and plastic fenders, enhance its off-road credentials while keeping the vehicle in line with modern SUV aesthetics

The Thar comes with two engine options. The 2.2-liter mHawk diesel engine produces 130 bhp and 300 Nm of torque, delivering strong low-end performance ideal for off-roading. It is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, which shifts smoothly and complements the diesel engine's torquey nature​(Mahindra Thar).

The second engine option is the 2.0-liter mStallion petrol engine, which generates 150 bhp and 320 Nm of torque, making it more powerful than the diesel variant.

 This engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission that delivers smooth and quick gear shifts, offering a refined driving experience. 

Both engines provide impressive off-road capabilities while being perfectly usable for daily driving in city conditions​.

One of the significant improvements in the new Thar is its ride and handling. The suspension setup, while still stiff to ensure off-road capability, offers a much more comfortable ride than the previous model. The independent front and multi-link rear suspension system absorbs road imperfections effectively, and the Thar feels planted both on and off the road​.

The Thar’s short wheelbase and stiff chassis improve its handling on winding roads. Though there is some body roll, especially around tight corners, it’s well-controlled for an SUV designed primarily for off-road driving. Off the beaten path, the Thar excels, thanks to its 4x4 drivetrain, mechanical rear differential lock, and high ground clearance of 226 mm. The SUV’s approach, departure, and ramp-over angles are also improved, ensuring it can tackle rough terrains with ease​.

The Mahindra Thar now offers a much more comfortable interior, particularly in the LX lifestyle variants. The front seats are well-cushioned and ergonomically designed, with lumbar support to make long drives more comfortable. The LX variant also offers front-facing rear seats, which are a significant improvement over the side-facing benches of the previous generation​.

However, space in the rear seats is limited, making them better suited for children or shorter adults, especially during longer trips. The access to the rear seats is via the front passenger side, where a handle allows the front seat to slide forward, which can be cumbersome for frequent use. Additionally, the boot space is limited, but folding down the 50:50 split rear seats creates extra room for luggage
