Alfa Romeo Returns To Formula 1 With Sauber

- Alfa Romeo returns to Formula 1 after over 30 years
- The team will be re-branded as 'Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team' for 2018
- Sauber already has a tie-up with Ferrari for sourcing engines
2018 will certainly be a year to watch out in the Formula 1 World Championship with major changes happening. The latest to join the club is Italian carmaker Alfa Romeo, which will be making a comeback to the sport in collaboration with Sauber F1 team. The two parties have agreed to a wide-ranging technical partnership. The team will also be re-branded as its title sponsor, and will now be officially known as 'Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team'.
Alfa Romeo returns to F1 after a break of over 30 years. FCA boss Sergio Marchionne was keen on the brand returning to the sport in some capacity. Sauber sources engines from Ferrari for its F1 car.
Speaking on the return of Alfa Romeo to F1, Sergio Marchionne said, "This agreement with the Sauber F1 team is a significant step in the reshaping of the Alfa Romeo brand, which will return to Formula 1 after an absence of more than 30 years. A storied marque that has helped make the history of this sport, Alfa Romeo will join other major automakers that participate in Formula 1. The brand itself will also benefit from the sharing of technology and strategic know-how with a partner of the Sauber F1 team's undisputed experience."
Welcoming the brand to the team, Sauber chairman Pascal Picci said, "Alfa Romeo has a long history of success in grand prix racing, and we are very proud that this internationally renowned company has chosen to work with us for its return to the pinnacle of motorsport. Working closely with a car manufacturer is a great opportunity for the Sauber Group to further develop its technology and engineering projects."
"We are confident that together we can bring the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team great success, and look forward to a long and successful partnership," he added further.
The Italian brand was active in F1 between 1979-1985, while it was last active in motorsport during the 2000s in the touring car championship.
