Delhi To Make EV Retrofitting Process Easier For Owners - Report

The Delhi government and the Delhi Transport Department are set to move the entire process of application of conversion of cars and scooters to electric vehicles online. As per reports the entire process from applying for fuel conversion, manufacturer details, products costs and how to apply for kits will all become an online process. Currently in Delhi diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles over 15 years are not allowed to on public roads leaving owners with three options – scrap the vehicle, sell it in another state or retrofit it into an EV.
As per an official, the retro fitment of ICE cars and scooters to EVs is not only beneficial to the environment but will also help owners save on the cost of purchase of a new vehicle. However conversion kits are also costly with prices varying depending on the make and model of the vehicle.

Buyers can currently scrap their old vehicle(above), sell it in other states or convert it to electric.
The process of conversion will involve two steps with the first being approved manufacturers registering their vehicle conversion kits post-certification from the International Centre for Automotive Technologies (ICAT) and Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). The details are to include the model for which the kit can be used, motor details, workshop location and more. In the second step the details will be made available to customers who can then select a kit based on their vehicle and cost factors.
The scheme is set to be approved in the coming weeks with as many as 11 approved kit manufacturers, to be listed on the portal. The approval process post-conversion is also set to become a digital process.
