According to a Business Standard report, Tata Motors is developing quadricycles under a project code-named 'Bravo'. Interestingly, the carmaker had not been exactly 'supportive' of the idea till now.

Bajaj Auto, unveiled its quadricycle - RE60 - in 2012, which lead to questions about the vehicle's usefulness in the country considering the number of 3-wheelers that ply on Indian roads. However, a plan to allow such vehicles to ply on the country's roads was cleared by the Law Ministry in 2014.

Despite Tata Motors' criticism of this vehicle category, word has it that the company is now looking at taking advantage of the scope presented by the intra-city transport segment. Hence, the quadricycle project.

The report also said the vehicle will be based on the Tata Iris light commercial vehicle platform, will come powered by an all-new petrol motor, and might be launched around 2018.

That said, the future of quadricycles still remains undecided due to the stay order on its roll-out from several high courts across the country. However, the central government recently moved the Supreme Court to transfer the petitions on the new vehicle category to the apex court. It remains to be seen if the apex court will lift the stay.
