Traffic Sign Recognition - Function And Intelligence

If only we all could adhere to the traffic signs each time, our wallets won't be credited with fines so often. Sometimes, it can be not easy even for seasoned drivers to handle the vehicle and keep track of road signs simultaneously.
But traffic sign recognition is one such technology that can change that entirely. This technology keeps track of road signs that fall on the route in the simplest terms.
You no longer have to juggle between driving and keeping a check for road signs. Whenever the system detects any speed limit or other important road information, it'll prompt the driver. Innovative, isn't it? Today, we will discuss all we know about this technology and help you understand its working and mechanism.
What is Traffic Sign Recognition?
Traffic sign recognition is the go-to technology that keeps the driver aware of the road sign information. Be it the speed limit or caution signs like barriers or falling rocks. The system will automatically detect the road traffic signs and notify you.
It allows you to concentrate on driving by looking out for the road signs. Many car models like the Nissan Magnite, Audi A8, BMW 5 Series, 5 Series Gran Turismo, BMW 7 Series, Mercedes Benz E class and S class have this. Additionally, it is also used in several models of Opel, Lexus and Volkswagen have this feature. The system equips image processing techniques for traffic sign recognition.

How Does Traffic Sign Recognition Operate?
Firstly, the traffic sign recognition system uses a camera to capture and detect road signs. If it detects any road sign, it'll notify the driver through the multi-information display. Some of the variants also alert the driver using navigation system data and camera.
It is also essential to highlight that the sign detection types depend upon the destination and model. The technology can detect signs such as “speed limit,” “children,” “turn ahead,” etc.
The detection method can be learning-based, colour-based, or shape-based methods. The traffic sign recognition technology first made its appearance in the 2009 Vauxhall Insignia as a ´speed limit sign recognition system´. In the same year, Mercedes and BMW also introduced it in their S class and 7-Series. But they came with limitations. These systems could only recognise the signboards that were round in shape. However, today´s camera based systems can recognise a variety of signs and in some cars, it appears as a part of the Advanced Driver Assist System (ADAS)

The Mechanism Behind Traffic Sign Recognition
The system mechanism behind the vehicle is a simple one. The traffic sign recognition technology uses a front-mounted camera. This front-mounted camera is placed at the top of the windshield near the rear glass.
A convolutional neural network uses deep learning techniques to detect and analyse these road signs. Moreover, there are various algorithms for road sign detection. It understands road signboard shapes such as hexagons, circles, and rectangles.

You can say goodbye to the bad habit of blatantly ignoring traffic signs. The traffic sign recognition system is sure to make you a responsible driver!
