What Makes KTM Popular in India?
KTM was founded in Austria and has built its identity around performance-focused motorcycles, motorsport and off-road riding. The brand entered the Indian motorcycle market through its partnership with Bajaj Auto, with KTM motorcycles being manufactured in India. This combination of European motorcycle engineering and local manufacturing has helped KTM offer performance-oriented motorcycles at prices suited to the Indian market.
KTM initially became popular in India with motorcycles such as the Duke 200, which introduced many riders to a more performance-oriented style of street motorcycle. Over the years, the company has expanded its range with smaller-capacity Duke models, the fully faired RC series and the Adventure lineup.
Today, KTM's Indian portfolio covers several categories. The Duke range includes the 160 Duke, 200 Duke, 250 Duke, 390 Duke, 160 Duke TFT and 390 Duke R. The RC range includes the RC 160, RC 200 and RC 390. Riders looking for long-distance touring or mixed-terrain capability can choose from the 390 Adventure, 390 Adventure X, 390 Adventure S and 390 Adventure R range. KTM India also offers larger motorcycles and dedicated motocross, enduro and dual-sport models.
One of KTM's biggest strengths is its focus on handling and rider involvement. Many KTM models use trellis-based frames and WP suspension, while higher-performance models get features such as motorcycle traction control, quickshifters, ride modes and cornering ABS.
KTM is positioned as a premium performance motorcycle brand in India. Its lineup caters to riders who want more than basic commuting, whether that means sporty city riding, weekend touring, track riding or off-road exploration.
Find Your Ideal KTM Bike
KTM offers motorcycles for different riding requirements, from everyday street riding to long-distance touring and off-road adventures. The right model depends on your experience, budget and how you plan to use the motorcycle.

KTM Performance and Chassis Technology
KTM's approach to technology is closely connected to performance and handling. Rather than simply adding convenience features, the brand uses electronics, suspension and chassis technology to give riders greater control.
Performance-Focused Engines
KTM motorcycles are designed around responsive power delivery and strong performance. The current 390 Duke, for example, uses a 349.32 cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine producing 41.5 PS and 33.5 Nm. It also gets ride-by-wire technology and motorcycle traction control.
The 390 Duke also offers different riding modes, cruise control, launch control and a dedicated track screen. These features allow riders to alter the motorcycle's behaviour depending on whether they are riding on the road or exploring its performance capabilities.
WP APEX Suspension
WP suspension is another important part of KTM's performance-focused approach. Depending on the model, KTM motorcycles use WP APEX USD forks and monoshocks, with higher-spec models offering additional adjustability. The KTM 250 Adventure, for example, gets 43 mm WP APEX USD forks with 200 mm of travel and a WP APEX monoshock with 205 mm of travel.
Quickshifter+ and Ride Modes
Several KTM motorcycles feature Quickshifter+, allowing riders to change gears without using the clutch under suitable riding conditions. Higher-performance models also offer different riding modes that alter the motorcycle's response and rider-aid settings. The 390 Duke, for example, offers Street and Rain modes, while its Track mode adds features such as launch control and a race-oriented display.
KTM Connect and Digital Displays
Modern KTM motorcycles also feature digital displays and smartphone connectivity. The 390 Adventure, for instance, gets a 5-inch TFT display with KTM Connect, along with navigation and connectivity features.
KTM Rider Aids and Safety Technology
KTM focuses heavily on braking, chassis stability and electronic rider aids. However, safety equipment differs between models and variants.
ABS and Cornering ABS
Several KTM motorcycles feature ABS, while higher-spec models get cornering ABS that can help maintain braking control when the motorcycle is leaned over. The RC 390, for example, gets cornering ABS as well as Supermoto ABS.
Adventure motorcycles also offer off-road ABS on selected models. The 390 Adventure combines cornering ABS and off-road ABS with motorcycle traction control to provide greater control across different surfaces.
Motorcycle Traction Control
Motorcycle Traction Control, or MTC, is available on several KTM motorcycles. It helps manage wheel slip when the system detects a loss of traction, which can be particularly useful when accelerating on changing road surfaces. The 390 Duke, for example, comes with MTC as part of its rider-aid package.
Trellis Frame and WP Suspension
KTM's split-trellis frame is a key part of the brand's handling philosophy. The lightweight chassis works with WP suspension to provide responsive handling and stability. The 250 Duke, for example, uses a steel trellis main frame with an aluminium subframe designed to improve rigidity, agility and chassis feedback.
Adventure-Specific Safety Equipment
KTM's Adventure motorcycles are equipped for different riding environments. The 390 Adventure combines traction control, cornering ABS, off-road ABS and ride-by-wire with long-travel suspension and high ground clearance.
Where KTM Bikes Fit Different Riding Needs
KTM has built a strong following among Indian riders by focusing on performance, handling and modern motorcycle technology.
- Performance-focused engines: KTM bikes are known for responsive engines and strong performance across their respective segments.
- Sharp handling: Lightweight chassis designs and WP suspension give many KTM motorcycles an agile riding character.
- Advanced rider aids: Selected models offer traction control, ride modes, quickshifters, cornering ABS and cruise control.
- Distinctive styling: KTM motorcycles have an aggressive design language that sets them apart from conventional commuter bikes.
- Wide performance range: The lineup stretches from entry-level Duke models to premium naked, supersport and Adventure motorcycles.
- Strong adventure portfolio: The 250 Adventure and 390 Adventure give riders options for touring and mixed-terrain riding.
Ownership Experience
Owning a KTM is about more than the motorcycle itself. The brand provides authorised service support, genuine spare parts and maintenance programmes designed to make ownership more predictable.
Service Network
KTM has authorised dealerships across India where owners can access sales, servicing and genuine parts. The brand also provides a dealer locator through its official platform.
Warranty & Maintenance Support
Warranty coverage varies by model, so buyers should check the specific terms applicable to their motorcycle before booking. KTM also offers KTM Assure maintenance plans through authorised dealerships.
KTM Assure includes options covering scheduled services and, depending on the plan, labour and replacement of spare parts during periodic maintenance. The plans are available in two- and three-year options.
Spare Parts & Maintenance
KTM recommends servicing motorcycles through authorised dealerships and using genuine parts. Maintenance requirements can vary considerably between a smaller Duke and a high-performance or Adventure motorcycle, so buyers should consider the service schedule and running costs before purchasing.
Resale Value
Popular KTM motorcycles such as the Duke and RC models have an established presence in India's premium motorcycle market. However, resale value can vary depending on the model, age, condition, service history and local demand.
Long-Term Reliability
Regular servicing is particularly important for performance-oriented motorcycles. Following the manufacturer's maintenance schedule and using the recommended parts and fluids can help keep a KTM running reliably over the long term.
What to Check Before Choosing a KTM
KTM motorcycles offer strong performance and technology, but they may not suit every type of rider.
- Performance comes first: Many KTM motorcycles are tuned for responsive performance and handling rather than relaxed, low-effort commuting.
- Some models have committed ergonomics: RC motorcycles have a more aggressive riding position than the Duke range, which may not suit riders looking primarily for comfort.
- Maintenance costs can be higher: Performance-oriented motorcycles can require more expensive tyres, consumables and maintenance than basic commuter bikes.
- Seat height matters: Several KTM motorcycles have relatively tall riding positions, particularly in the Adventure range. Check your ability to comfortably reach the ground before buying.
- Not every KTM is designed for beginners: The larger Duke, RC and Adventure models offer considerable performance and may be better suited to experienced riders.
- Choose the right variant: KTM offers multiple versions of models such as the 390 Adventure, with differences in equipment, suspension, wheels and electronics.
car&bike Expert Buying Tips
Buying a KTM should start with understanding how you intend to ride rather than simply choosing the motorcycle with the biggest engine.
- If most of your riding happens in the city, the 160 Duke, 200 Duke or 250 Duke can offer a good balance of agility and performance.
- Riders looking for significantly stronger performance should consider the 390 Duke, while those wanting an even more focused version can look at the 390 Duke R.
- If you want a fully faired motorcycle for sporty riding, compare the RC 200 and RC 390 based on performance, riding position and budget. The RC 390 combines its performance engine with WP APEX suspension, traction control, Quickshifter+ and cornering ABS.
- For long-distance touring and mixed terrain, the 250 Adventure and 390 Adventure are more practical choices than the Duke or RC range.
- If off-road riding is a major priority, look beyond the standard Adventure models and compare the 390 Adventure R based on its longer-travel suspension, 21/18-inch spoke wheels and off-road-focused equipment.
- Compare variants carefully before booking. Features such as adjustable suspension, traction control, ride modes, cruise control and different ABS modes can vary considerably between models.
- Finally, take a proper test ride. KTM motorcycles can have very different riding positions, seat heights, engine characteristics and suspension setups, so the motorcycle that looks best on paper may not necessarily be the most comfortable choice for you.
