Why Do Bikes Cost As Much As Cars?

- Bike enthusiasts pay any amount for their favourite bike
- A lot of research and development goes into making a bike
- Customizations play a considerable role in bikes costing more
Factors such as materials and labour costs contribute significantly to the high price of bikes.
Economics
Bike prices vary from time to time. This is because of the market dynamics. Many brands place their bikes in a category where they make enough profit, and their inventory does not sit idle. It is noteworthy that too expensive bikes would not sell, and too cheap ones won't recoup the materials and labour costs.

Materials
One major factor in bikes being as expensive as cars are their material. There are various forms and grades of carbon fibre, and the higher the quality of carbon fibre, the higher the price. This also includes the price of more than normal care required during cold storage and refrigerated transit. Also, if the manufacturer also fabricates carbon on its own, they have to recoup the cost of carbon.

Assembling
Materials that are of higher quality demand more care when they are manufactured. The clean welds, for example, requires more attention. Also, carbon fibre requires a very controlled and consistent precision. There is almost no room for error, so the cost is high.

High-Quality
A major factor for bikes costing as much as cars are the quality and quality checks required for the bikes. Huge brands undertake regular quality checks, and the engineers visit the facilities routinely. They keep an eye on every step of bike manufacturing, which is why high bike prices.
Customizing
Bikes that are customized cost a lot more than a standard bike. Anything you add to your stock vehicle will add to the cost. You pay extra for additional features, which is why bikes cost more than cars.
Research and Development
Bikes change technologically faster than cars, and the technology costs money. Manufacturers look for new ways and innovate to take their bikes to a higher level. They want their bikes to be cutting edge and on top of the market. Big manufacturers spend huge amounts of money on research and development. The costs include software, employee salaries, materials, and prototypes.
One thing to note is that the more research and development goes into producing a bike, the more the cost will be.

Marketing and Branding
Marketing and branding make a huge difference in the price of bikes. Many companies position themselves as being superior even if they are not. Such companies collect profits with lesser bikes sold compared to other manufacturers who might sell more but pocket less profit.
Bike companies place their bikes at higher prices because they know that enthusiasts will pay any amount, and the manufacturer will recoup the money and profits on top of that.
When bikes are expensive but still selling, manufacturers decide to keep the price point the same as it means more profit for them.
