BMW X1 LWB vs X1: What's Different?

Giving buyers the option of a longer version of its entry-level SUV, BMW has expanded the X1 line-up in India with the new X1 LWB. Priced at Rs 49.90 lakh (ex-showroom), the long-wheelbase model is actually Rs 1 lakh cheaper than the standard-wheelbase X1 petrol. While the two look broadly similar, the LWB gets a longer body, more space in the second row and 20 bhp bump in its output. Here’s what changes between the two.

BMW X1 LWB vs X1: Dimensions

The biggest change is, naturally, the wheelbase. At 2,800mm, the X1 LWB has 108mm more wheelbase than the standard X1, while its overall length has grown by 116mm. The long-wheelbase version is also 11mm taller and significantly wider at 2,104mm compared to 1,845mm for the standard X1. The extra length also provides more luggage space, with the X1 LWB offering 540 litres, 64 litres more than the standard SUV's 476-litre boot.

The additional wheelbase is primarily about giving rear-seat passengers more room. The X1 LWB gets a revised rear seat designed around the extra space, while BMW has also retuned the suspension with comfort in mind. The cabin gets a different colour treatment as well. The X1 LWB comes with red seat upholstery, while the standard X1 gets black or grey options.

However, the longer version does give up some equipment available on the standard X1. For instance, the X1 LWB misses out on front-seat ventilation.

BMW X1 LWB vs X1: Powertrain

The powertrain is another important difference. The standard X1 is available with petrol and diesel engines, whereas the X1 LWB is currently offered only with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine.

Interestingly, the LWB gets a higher state of tune. Its engine produces 154 bhp and 230 Nm, compared with 134 bhp from the 1.5-litre petrol in the standard X1. That means the LWB has 20 bhp more, while the torque output remains the same.The engine is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and drives the front wheels.

BMW X1 LWB vs X1: Price

The BMW X1 LWB is priced at Rs 49.90 lakh, ex-showroom, while the standard-wheelbase X1 petrol costs Rs 50.90 lakh. That makes the LWB version Rs 1 lakh cheaper, despite offering a larger body, more rear-seat space and a more powerful version of the 1.5-litre petrol engine. Both the X1 and X1 LWB are locally assembled in India.
