New Generation Volkswagen Beetle Will Be Electric

According to reports, Volkswagen is actively considering plans to upgrade the Beetle with an all-electric, rear-wheel drive motor based on the new MEB (Modular Electrification Toolkit) platform. At the Detroit Motor Show, the German car-makers announced that they plan to introduce coupe-styled electric SUVs in 2020 boasting the 500 km range. VW has already initiated the process with the showcase of I.D. Crozz concept car, which the company plans to introduce in the market by 2022. The new VW Beetle Electric will also be based on the same platform as the I.D. Crozz concept.

Herbert Diess, Chairman, Volkswagen revealed that the new electric models will include the Microbus, Beetle, Kubelwagen and Buggy. He, however, also said that the company does not have a concrete plan on Beetle's successor, but did suggest that it to be an electric motor with RWD. The electric Beetle will incorporate many design ideas from the I.D. Crozz concept car. But unlike concept, the electric Beetle will come with RWD functionality. It will have a single electric motor churning out power of 169 bhp from the rear axle. For its successor, VW has gone back to the original Beetle, which had a rear-mounted engine with RWD.
