We told you a while back that Google was entering the automotive world. Of course the autonomous car project is what we all know but there is also the Human Machine Interface segment that Google targeted. Now that Google's I/O Developer Conference is underway, it looked like the apt place to take the wraps off the Android Auto.

According to Android Director of Engineering Patrick Brady, "Android Auto combines the best the best of both worlds. You get the connected apps and services on your smartphone with the physical controls that were optimised for driving in your car."

The system is designed to bring a sense of familiarity inside the cabin of the car and works with Android smartphones in the same way Apple's CarPlay does.

As you can see in the video, the interface is kept simple and even Google Maps has a streamlined design with larger touch targets to minimize distractions. Android Auto also leverages Google Now's voice commands to give you instant access to Google Maps, text messages and compatible apps such as Google Play Music. People can set reminders that will carry over to their smartphone even after they leave the car ensuring all-round connectivity.

The first vehicle with Android Auto will be introduced later this year. There are several automakers like Audi, General Motors, Honda and Hyundai, who have already signed up to be a part of the Open Automotive Alliance which also includes NVIDIA.
