What's New?

Mercedes-Benz has finally launched the all-new GLE SUV in India at a starting price of Rs. 73.70 lakh for the 300 d, going all the way up to Rs. 1.25 crore for the range-topping 400 d Hip Hop variant, (all prices ex-showroom, India). The fourth-generation Mercedes-Benz GLE had a long time coming to our market after its global unveil back in October 2018 at the Paris Motor Show. It's an evolution in terms of design over its predecessor and looks curvier and more urban, being adept in the urban landscape. Mercedes says the GLE 300 d has been sold out for the first quarter of 2020.

The butch face draws inspiration from the mighty X-Class pick-up truck and sports a much bolder octagonal grille while the bumper and hood look more muscular and better sculpted. The grille is flanked by new multibeam LED headlamps which integrates the twin-eyebrows daytime running lights (DRLs). The wheelbase is up by a good 80 mm. The GLE 300 d rides on 19-inch alloys, while the 400 d gets 20-inch alloy wheels. The tailgate and rear bumper have been extensively revised as well and there are new LED tail lamps and horizontal chrome tipped exhaust.

Now the increased wheelbase has translated into more space inside the cabin as well with 69 mm more legroom for second-row passengers. The cabin too gets an entirely new layout featuring the S-Class inspired dashboard and central console. Like most of the modern day Mercedes cars, even the GLE gets a 12.3-inch wide touchscreen which incorporates the instrument cluster and MBUX infotainment system. And of course, even this one gets the party piece- Mercedes Me connected car tech featuring the 'Hey Mercedes' voice command system. Other comfort creatures include, a panoramic sunroof, full LED heads-up display, four-zone climate control, ventilated seats and an array of ambient lighting options among others.

Under the hood, the range-topping petrol GLE 300 d 4MATIC gets a BS6 compliant 2.0-litre diesel motor that puts out 241 bhp and 500 Nm of peak torque. The model can sprint from 0-100 kmph in 7.2 seconds. The GLE 400 d uses a 3.0-litre diesel motor that is BS6 compliant as well and belts out 325 bhp and 700 Nm of peak torque. 0-100 kmph can be achieved in 5.7 seconds. All engine options are mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox as standard. Out in the market place, the Mercedes-Benz GLE continues to rival the like of the BMW X5, Audi Q7 and the Land Rover Discovery.

Mercedes-Benz GLE: A Masterpiece of Innovation

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the new GLE facelift. This update to the GLE showcases a host of advancements over its predecessor and brings mild hybrid variants as standard. Infused with cutting-edge driver assist and safety features, the GLE stands out with innovations like the E-Active body control, an advanced suspension system, and a semi-autonomous feature assisting drivers in stop-and-go traffic. The Active Brake Assist, complemented with a turn-off function, ensures safety by taking preventive measures against potential collisions on single-lane roads.

While retaining its signature look, the GLE now boasts a more aerodynamic and sleek design. The front fascia, seemingly inspired by the X-Class pick-up truck, showcases an octagonal radiator grille adorned with a chrome-plated under guard, while the bonnet proudly flaunts the power dome character line. Its multi-beam LED headlamps promise visibility for over 650 meters. The extended wheelbase, 80mm more than its predecessor, complements the novel design and looks proportionate as expected. Offered with diverse tire sizes ranging from 19 to 22 inches, its rear design exudes compactness with rounded contours and slender LED tail lamps.

The GLE’s cabin promises a spatial delight, thanks to the extended wheelbase providing an additional 69mm legroom for second-row passengers. Reflecting consumer preferences, Mercedes-Benz offers optional third-row seating. The interior design draws inspiration from the S-Class, with elongated 12.3-inch touchscreens reminiscent of those in the E-Class and G-Class. Grab handles seamlessly integrate into the central console design. The GLE’s full LED head-up display and advanced MBUX infotainment system runs NTG 7, the latest version of the MBUX system.

With the GLE, they have once again exemplified their commitment to ensuring every journey is as safe as possible. The air suspension is not just about optimizing comfort; it’s an advanced suspension system that reacts swiftly to different road conditions, offering optimum stability. The Active Stop-and-Go takes the stress out of driving in heavy traffic conditions, assisting the driver by semi-automatically following the vehicle ahead in stop-and-go traffic.

But it’s the Active Brake Assist that stands as a cornerstone of the GLE’s safety arsenal. This feature monitors the road and on detecting a potential collision scenario—especially with oncoming traffic on single-lane roads—it activates the brakes, thus mitigating risks. In addition to these, a host of other passive and active safety features ensure that passengers are cocooned in a protective shield, be it through advanced airbag systems, reinforced cabin structures, or electronic stability programs.

The GLE is available in three variants in India. The 300 d 4MATIC boasts of a four-cylinder diesel engine that delivers 266 bhp and 550 Nm of torque. The GLE 450 d 4MATIC with an in-line six-cylinder diesel engine churns out 364 bhp and 750Nm of peak torque. The GLE 450 4MATIC with an in-line six-cylinder petrol engine with EQ boost, offering an impressive 367bhp and 500Nm of peak torque.
The 48V mild hybrid is standard and it offers an EQ boost is standard with an additional 22bhp and 250Nm. The engines are paired seamlessly with a 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox, supported by the 4MATIC four-wheel-drive system.

The GLE doesn’t just move; it glides. Every aspect of its ride and handling is engineered for comfort. The advanced suspension system, with the innovative E-Active body control, ensures that whether you’re on a butter-smooth highway or navigating rugged terrains, the ride remains consistently plush. The 4MATIC four-wheel-drive system ensures optimum power distribution to all wheels, resulting in enhanced grip, reduced wheel slippage, and superior handling even in challenging conditions.

The GLE's handling Is responsive and agile, with the steering offering precise feedback. Whether you’re taking sharp turns, overtaking on highways, or simply maneuvering in tight parking spaces, the GLE responds with an ease that belies its size. The combination of its powerful engine, smooth gearbox, and adaptive suspension makes every drive an experience to relish.

The GLE is priced between Rs 96.4 lakh and Rs 1.15 crore (ex-showroom India). Every aspect of the GLE, from its state-of-the-art features to its luxurious interiors, justifies its positioning in the premium segment.

Deciding on the right variant is a crucial choice for potential buyers, and the Mercedes-Benz GLE offers several options tailored to individual preferences. If performance is your primary criterion, the GLE 450 iteration with its robust in-line six-cylinder petrol engine paired with the EQ boost is a compelling choice.

For those with a focus on fuel efficiency and are looking forward to the future, it might be worth going for the 2-litre, four-cylinder diesel variant or the plug-in hybrid.

The luxury SUV car segment has always been fiercely competitive, and the GLE is set to lock horns with some formidable adversaries. BMW X5, with its dynamic design, advanced tech features, and reputed driving dynamics, promises to be a strong contender. Similarly, the Audi Q7, renowned for its spacious interiors, advanced safety features, and powerful performance, will be vying for the top spot. While the GLE boasts of advanced safety systems, sleek design, and innovative tech features, its competitors bring to the table their unique selling points and brand legacies as well.

Choosing the Mercedes-Benz GLE is more than a vehicle selection; it’s an embrace of a certain way of life, a journey filled with moments, and a declaration of one’s values.
