The Ashok Leyland Stile was born thanks to the company's joint venture with Japanese car maker Nissan Motor Company. The Stile was part of a 4 car deal with the Nissan alliance; the others being the Dost and Partner and one more.

The re-badged Nissan Evalia, sold only for commercial application, did not really take off in terms of sales and though it was a bold move by the commercial vehicle maker. The Stile was up against the likes of the Mahindra Xylo, Nissan Evalia, Chevrolet Enjoy and even the Toyota Innova and the competition proved to be stiffer than expected.
