Exclusive: Royal Enfield Himalayan 440 Launch Soon | Celebrating 10 Years of the Himalayan

- The 440 will serve at the entry level Himalayan
- Will be pegged at new adventure riders
- With the launch, the Himalayan brand also completes a decade
If you love adventure and have always loved the Himalayan, there is good news in store. car&bike has information that the new Himalayan 440 might be launched at Royal Enfield’s Himalayan Base Camp event in Ladakh in September 2026, which we think is an apt location for a motorcycle with adventure in its roots. But what is interesting is that this launch coincides with the Himalayan celebrating 10 years of its adventurous existence. So, let’s relive this fantastic journey a little.

In 2016, Royal Enfield took a leap of faith. Until then, the company's identity revolved around classic roadsters like the Bullet and Classic. Adventure motorcycles were either expensive imports or intimidating machines that remained out of reach for most Indian buyers. Then came the Himalayan—a simple, purpose-built motorcycle designed to go anywhere, regardless of whether there was a road beneath its wheels.
A decade later, the Himalayan has become one of Royal Enfield's most important motorcycles. It not only created an entirely new segment in the Indian market but also encouraged thousands of riders to venture beyond city limits and discover touring, trail riding and adventure motorcycling.

The Motorcycle That Started It All
The original Himalayan wasn't designed to impress on a spec sheet. It wasn't the fastest, most powerful or the most technologically advanced motorcycle in its class. Instead, it focused on the fundamentals.
Long-travel suspension, a comfortable upright riding position, a 21-inch front wheel, generous luggage mounting points, simple mechanics and a torquey single-cylinder engine made it an ideal companion for Indian roads and beyond. Whether it was navigating broken village roads, climbing mountain passes or spending days on the highway, the Himalayan proved that adventure riding didn't have to be expensive or intimidating.

It also introduced Royal Enfield's first all-new LS410 engine, moving away from the company's long-running UCE platform.
More Than Just a Motorcycle
Perhaps the Himalayan's biggest achievement wasn't sales figures or awards. It inspired a generation of riders.
Ladakh trips became more common than ever before. Weekend trail rides, camping expeditions and cross-country tours gained popularity, with the Himalayan becoming the default choice for many first-time adventure riders.
It also sparked a booming aftermarket industry offering everything from crash guards and panniers to auxiliary lights, navigation systems and suspension upgrades.
In many ways, the Himalayan made adventure motorcycling mainstream in India.
The Himalayan 450 Changed the Game
The biggest shift came in 2023 with the arrival of the Himalayan 450.
Built on an entirely new platform, it featured the liquid-cooled Sherpa 450 engine, ride-by-wire throttle, TFT display with navigation, switchable ABS and significantly improved performance.
The Himalayan 450 wasn't merely an update—it was a complete reinvention aimed at riders looking for greater capability both on and off the road.
However, the jump in technology and performance also resulted in a higher asking price, placing it beyond the reach of some buyers who had previously considered the original Himalayan.
Enter the Himalayan 440
This is where the upcoming Himalayan 440 fits into Royal Enfield's strategy. Rather than replacing the Himalayan 450, the new motorcycle is expected to replace the ageing Himalayan 411 and become the brand's entry-level adventure tourer. Think of it as the spiritual successor to the original Himalayan.
The new model is expected to retain the approachable, easy-going nature that made the 411 popular while introducing meaningful improvements in performance, refinement and features.
A larger 440cc engine should offer stronger low-end torque and better highway performance without sacrificing the beginner-friendly character that made the Himalayan so accessible. Expect updates in terms of styling, technology and equipment as well, while keeping costs in check to maintain an attractive price point. As of now the Scram 440 is the only bike sporting the 440 platform and it makes sense to expand on it.
This dual-model strategy also allows Royal Enfield to cater to two distinct buyers. The Himalayan 440 will target riders stepping into adventure touring for the first time, while the Himalayan 450 will continue to appeal to enthusiasts seeking greater performance and more advanced technology.
A Legacy That Continues
Very few motorcycles can genuinely claim to have changed an entire market. The original Himalayan did exactly that. It made adventure touring accessible, affordable and achievable for ordinary riders. More importantly, it changed the way Indians viewed motorcycling—not just as a means of transport, but as a way to explore.
As the Himalayan enters its second decade, the upcoming Himalayan 440 isn't just another new motorcycle. It represents the continuation of a philosophy that began ten years ago, build a machine that's simple, capable and ready to take riders wherever curiosity leads them.
If the original Himalayan opened the door to adventure for an entire generation, the Himalayan 440 could well do the same for the next. The new Himalayan 440 is expected to be launched on September 4, 2026.
