Two Wheeler August Sales: Manufacturers See Rise In Sales, Bajaj Dips

- Bajaj Auto sales decline by 7 per cent
- Suzuki records highest ever monthly sales
- Suzuki sold ove 56,000 two-wheelers in August 2017
The month of August 2017 has been a mixed bag as far as two-wheeler sales is concerned. First up is Bajaj Auto, which saw a decline of two per cent in its domestic sales. Bajaj Auto sold 171,664 units in August 2017 and for the month of August 2016, it sold 174,719 units. The exports for Bajaj Auto grew by 7 per cent. Bajaj exported 112,197 units in August 2017 and in the same month last year, it exported 105,192 units. The company has sold 763,141 units for the period of April 2017 to August 2017 which is a dip of 15 per cent. The sales for the same period last year was 897,923 units.

On the other hand, Suzuki Two-wheelers has recorded its highest ever monthly sales for a single month in August 2017. The company sold 56,745 units in the August which is a year-on-year growth of a massive 54.3 per cent. The company has announced that it is targeting annual sales of 500,000 units in FY2017-18, which is a first for itself. Suzuki has sold 223,552 units in the period of April 2017 to August 2017.
Sajeev Rajasekhran, EVP, Sales and Marketing, SMIPL said, "Our performance in August has been consistent with the rapid strides that we continue to take in FY 2017-18. With the introduction of new Gixxer ABS variants and the Gixxer Special Edition this month, we can now offer our customers new, exciting options across all product categories. Not only does this augur well for us, but ahead of the festive season, has injected a renewed confidence in our efforts to best serve our customers."

Continuing its purple patch, Royal Enfield too posted a growth of 22 per cent in its August 2017 sales. The company sold 67,977 units in August 2017. Of these, 63,637 units were models up to 350 cc and 4,340 units were of capacity up to 500 cc. Royal Enfield sold a total of 55,721 units in August 2016 in comparison. The exports for the company in August 2017 grew by 12.06 per cent where it exported 1,105 units as compared to 986 units in August 2016. Royal Enfield has sold 316,432 units in the time period from January 2017 to August 2017. The exports for the same duration have been 7,521 units.
TVS Motor Company
TVS too showed a growth of a modest 16 per cent overall in August 2017. The company sold 317,563 units in August 2017 and 274,303 units in August 2016. The domestic sales stood at 270,544 units in last month from 238,984 units in August 2016, registering a growth of 13.2 per cent. The scooter sales in particular grew by 49.3 per cent with 114,354 units sold in August 2017 in comparison to 76,572 units in August 2016. Similarly, the motorcycles sales registered 111,927 units in August 2017 as compared to 114,195 units in August 2016.
