SsangYong shows the first pictures of its new SUV model called Torres. The model developed under the project name J100 or U100 is scheduled to be launched in Korea this summer, after which a purely electrically powered version will roll out in Europe by 2023. The name Torres derives from the Chilean national park Torres del Paine. The area in the extreme south of Patagonia, known as an outdoor Eldorado, with high mountains, glaciers, lakes, and rivers, fits the positioning: the model is intended to convey a sense of adventure and robustness. Production of the SsangYong Torres EV is scheduled to start in June 2022.

The images that have now been released give a foretaste of the design and the future SsangYong design language called “Powered by Toughness”. At the front there is a radiator grille with vertical ribs, at the rear, the spare wheel hangs outside, like in classic off-road vehicles. SsangYong does not explicitly say whether the electric version will also get the grille. The manufacturer has not yet shown any pictures of the interior or of the cockpit either. However, the Korean manufacturer promises ample space and “numerous practical functions” for leisure activities such as camping and discovery tours in nature.

SsangYong presented the first sketches of the J100 in July 2021. The grille and the spare wheel hanging outside were already visible back then. According to the manufacturer, the Torres is intended to fill the gap between the compact Korando SUV and the mid-sized Rexton. Accordingly, the Torres could be around 4,650 mm long. With that, the SsangYong Torres EV would compete against the Skoda Enyaq, and MG Marvel R Electric.
