Documents Motorcyclists Must Carry

Having the proper documents and keeping them in possession at all times is an important part of owning a vehicle. These documents should be kept up to date and ready in case of any emergency. These documents come useful at all times – claiming insurance, getting permits for the vehicle, etc. If someone is caught for riding without the proper documents, they could be fined. It is thus necessary that bike owners are aware of what documents to carry.

Two-wheeler Registration Certificate
The RC is proof that the motorcycle has been registered with the Regional Transport Office. It contains information like the vehicle's category, the border within which the bike can operate, the chassis and engine number, along with fuel used and the capacity. The RC registration expires after a period after which it should be renewed. Travelling without RC is illegal.

Driving License
The DL license verifies the type of vehicle one is allowed to operate – 4-wheelers, 3-wheelers, 2-wheelers, etc. The DL is offered to the driver after they've passed a driving license test. It is also a certification of the ownership of the vehicle. This should be renewed after the expiry period. If someone is caught travelling without the proper driving license, they can be fined for this offense!
Insurance Policy
The law states that an insurance policy should be one of the key documents in possession of the rider. The document contains information such as the name of the insurer, the vehicle's registration number, the coverage type, and the expiry date of the policy. The policy types include:
- Third-party Bike Insurance
- Bike Own-Damage policy
- Comprehensive Two-Wheeler policy
along with several add-ons to the policy.

Pollution Under Control Certificate
Emissions are a major cause of pollution in the atmosphere; they need to be kept in check. This certificate mentions the emission level of the vehicle. This level should tally with the limit that has been set by the government. The policy for emission control is revised frequently. If the PUC certificate has expired, the owner should get it renewed immediately.
Vehicle Fitness Certificate
The two-wheeler should be in optimum condition while travelling on the road. The vehicle's fitness is scrutinized by the RTO; if they find any defaults or problems with the emission levels, the certificate will not be provided. Without this certificate, one is not allowed to travel on the road.
Rider's Medical Certificate
There is a certain age limit, 50 years, after which the drivers would be required to show a medical certificate every time they're asked. The medical certificate should be signed by a registered practitioner who has assessed the individual to be fit to operate a two-wheeler.
