Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250, Sportster S Recalled In The US

- More than 3,900 bikes are affected by the recall
- The issue is over a faulty instrument console
- Harley-Davidson dealerships will offer a free software update to fix it
Harley-Davidson has recalled certain units of the Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250, as well as the Harley-Davidson Sportster S in the US. The recall has been issued due to a software problem with the instrument cluster of the affected bikes. As many as 3,917 units of the Pan America 1250 and the Sportster S have been affected by the recall. According to details of the recall issued by Harley-Davidson, the TFT instrument console on the affected bikes of these models, fails to display the speedometer and neutral gear indicator when the ambient temperature falls below freezing.

The affected motorcycles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 123, which includes "Motorcycle Controls and Displays" and need to be recalled and fixed. The affected motorcycles will display an error message at start-up. In case an owner ignores the message and decides to ride the affected motorcycle anyway, there could be a potential risk of a crash due to the lack of a speedometer and/or neutral indicator.

The recall has also affected some units of the Harley-Davidson Sportster S.

Both the Pan America 1250 and the Sportster S are offered on sale in India as well, but it's not clear if any of the motorcycles sold in India are likely to be affected by the same issue.
