The Husqvarna Svartpilen 250 is a neo-retro scrambler based on the KTM 250 Duke. The motorcycle is powered by a 248.8 cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, DOHC engine that belts out 29.5 bhp of power at 9,000 rpm, against peak torque of 24 Nm at 7,500 rpm. The engine is paired to a 6-speed gearbox. The trellis frame is the same as the KTM 250 Duke, but the rear sub-frame is different to accommodate the slightly different tail section. The Husqvarna Svartpilen 250 is now priced at Rs. 2.10 lakh (Ex-showroom).

Like the KTM, the Svartpilen 250 also employs 43 mm upside down front forks, but the internals of the fork is said to be different. Dimensions are also the exact same as the KTM, but the 842 mm seat height makes the Huskies tall. The 166 kg kerb weight is 3 kg less than the KTM 250 Duke, but it isn't exactly lightweight either; but it's a good 14 kg less than the Bajaj Dominar 250, another product with more or less the same engine platform with a slightly different state of tune.

Yes! It's a case of sibling rivalry here, and the Husqvarna Vitpilen 250 is more or less the same motorcycle, but with a neo-retro cafe racer ergonomics, and finished in a while colour. It shares the same engine and cycle parts as well, and also is priced at Rs. 2.10 lakh (Ex-showroom). The Vitpilen 250 has a hunkered down, sporty riding stance, which is all right for short bursts around the city, but it's the Svartpilen 250 which is the more practical choice.

The KTM 250 Adventure has an upright riding position and handling is its forte. It's great for touring, mild off-road riding, and can also do the daily commute with equal ease and comfort.

The KTM 250 Adventure is an entry-level adventure bike based on the same platform shared with the KTM 250 Duke and the Husqvarant Svartpilen 250. It shares the same engine, but the chassis, bodywork and cycle parts are shared with the bigger KTM 390 Adventure. The KTM 250 Adventure offers a more versatile option, but it's also slightly more expensive at Rs. 2.30 lakh (Ex-showroom). But even at that price, it's the pick of our 250 cc motorcycles, being versatile.

Yes, it's not an apples to apples rival to the Husqvarna Svartpilen 250. But the Royal Enfield Himalayan offers an adventure flavour in more or less the same price bracket. Prices for the RE Himalayan begin at Rs. 2.05 lakh (Ex-showroom) and that makes it an attractive alternative for someone with a budget considering any of the models from the Bajaj/KTM/Husqvarna platform. Besides, the Himalayan offers a bigger displacement engine, if not very rev happy, and is a comfortable tourer as well. The 411 cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled, single overhead cam (SOHC) engine remains the same, and puts out 24.3 bhp at 6,500 rpm and 32 Nm of peak torque between 4,000-4,500 rpm. The fuel-injected engine gets the same 5-speed gearbox as well.

The Bajaj Dominar 400 is a great value-for-money package
