Learning More About A Slipper Clutch

- The slipper clutch is an integral part of any bike
- It is a mechanism where the clutch can slip during any downshifting
- This means that vehicle speed stays in sync with the speed
Bike performance is hugely dependent upon the engine, the gearbox and also the suspension setup to an extent. At the same time, the slipper clutch is a vital component in this context. It was earlier offered with only premium and luxury models but has now entered various entry and mid-level segments as well. Many bikes now have slipper clutches as standard offerings while they are also promoted extensively as USPs by bike manufacturers and brands.

But what does a slipper clutch do? How does it help the rider? Is it any good for the bike itself? Here's taking a look at the mechanism of a slipper clutch and how it functions.

What is a slipper clutch and how does it function?
A slipper clutch helps the clutch to easily slip during any downshifting or hard braking, ensuring that the vehicle speed stays absolutely in sync with the speed of revving the engine. This prevents the locking up of the rear wheel. Suppose a bike is being driven at more than 90 kmph on the highway and suddenly something comes in front. In this situation, hard braking is naturally unavoidable. At the same time, riders will try to lower vehicle speed through down-shifting two gears at least. However, this will put strain on the gearbox while the braking force of the engine or the slowing force on the rear wheels may lead to them locking up altogether. They may also start wobbling, leading to an avoidable mishap. Hence, this is the scenario where a slipper clutch becomes useful.

Bikes without slipper clutches transfer their engine braking or slowing force to the rear wheel instantly, leading to lock-ups or wobbles of the same. The slipper clutch prevents any such incident from taking place. It makes it safer to brake or downshift at higher speeds and then accelerate again. Hence, all high-performance motorcycles get slipper clutches as standard, to enable safer hard braking for riders in such situations. As can be seen, the slipper clutch is an integral feature of most bikes nowadays and not just performance models. It goes a long way towards ensuring safety in various situations. You should consider going for a bike that has slipper clutch when you purchase your next model in almost any market category.
