New Suzuki Swift Sport Spotted Undergoing ARAI Testing

- Swift Sport is powered by 138 bhp 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine
- Gearbox options include a 6-speed manual or automatic depending on market
- Spotted undergoing ARAI testing near Pune
The new Suzuki Swift Sport has been spotted undergoing testing by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) near Pune. The third-gen hot hatchback made its global debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor show powered by a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine. The first-gen Swift Sport was revealed back in 2006 with the second-gen model arriving in 2011. Interestingly both generations of the sportier and hot hatchback variants of the Swift were reportedly considered for an India launch with the second-gen car even displayed at the Auto Expo though these plans never came to fruition.
With the new third-gen model now seen undergoing testing, we could finally see the hot hatchback launch in India. Compared to the standard Swift sold in India, the Sport sits lowers on larger wheels, more aggressive bumpers and prominent dual exhaust to add to its sporty personality. There are changes under the skin too, compared to the standard Swift including a revised suspension to sharpen up ride and handling and upgraded brakes.

The car spotted near Pune had a sticker on the rear window reading 'On Test By ARAI'.
Powering the latest iteration of Suzuki's hot hatch is a 1.4-litre, direct injection, turbo-petrol engine used by the company's larger models in international markets. The unit develops 138 bhp and 230 Nm with gearbox options including a 6-speed manual or torque converter automatic in some markets.
The launch of the Swift Sport would bring Maruti back into the hot hatchback market with its last outing, the Baleno RS long since discontinued.
There is no news yet from Maruti Suzuki when we could expect the hot hatch to launch in India. However, given that the model is being ARAI tested the carmaker could be eyeing bringing the car to India via the CKD route.
