What is Bidirectional Charging?

There has been a new weather trend in Texas, commonly called Texas Winter Storm. Parts of the United States, northern Mexico, and Canada have been affected heavily due to this. Almost 4.2 million dwellers of Texas had to survive a severe power cut in the whole state due to problems and blackouts.

How can the latest trucks and vehicles be a power supply source?
Due to the massive problem of power supply, homeowners had to find ways to ensure that there was a proper source of light at home. Even though there is no electricity supply, homes should be properly heated, and so, trucks were discovered to be the best source of supplying power. It mainly functions on a robust and efficient power system, the PowerBoost onboard generator.
Homeowners can connect up to 7.2 kW of power to this hybrid generator model. By this, it can give sufficient power and electric supply to homes. Therefore, instead of waiting to restore the power supply, many home dwellers have opted for this option who have trucks or similar vehicles and could manage a good source of power supply to their homes.

How does the Powerboost Onboard Generator work?
Most of the homeowners used the truck or vehicle as the main generator to cope with the winter storm. But this is not the case with every house owner in Texas, as there are people who do not own any sort of vehicle to get the power supply.
After the news of the category of power supply got noticed, it has been termed as bidirectional charging. It is an unusual method of setting a power source between two points. As per the name, the way of charging is two-directional. Here, the power supply travels from the grid to the charging source and vice-versa. However, interestingly, the vehicles equipped for two-way charging can take and dispense electricity in two ways.
In this charging method, the alternating current travels from the grid and gets converted to direct current. The electrified vehicles have the right type of power supply that has the capability to send DC power to the outward direction and convert it to AC electricity. Therefore, Texans having vehicles have this as the best choice source during the crisis period amidst winter storms.

How are V2G and V2H related to bidirectional charging?
The terms V2H and V2G are used with bidirectional charging,a vehicle to home, and grid supply of power. In this, when an electrified vehicle is connected to a power supply, it can send the power back to its grid. It can do so by drawing power, storing it for peak times, and sending it back at peak hours. When such a mechanism can work, this is the best option available for parked vehicles as it can take power as and when required. It can easily support the grid by returning power to the grid.
In the case of V2H, it is a power supply to the home from a source of the hybrid truck. Here, the onboard panel has the potency to supply almost 2.4kW or 7.2kW power by connecting with extension cords to the source in your home. Therefore, it should be done carefully to take power from the source and supply it to the home, helping the owner save money in this way.
How to work with vulnerable grids?
Electric vehicles cannot support a grid line alone. Even in a power generator, the distribution and transmission points are at vulnerable positions and tend to fail at any point in time. This can become vulnerable for above-ground equipment, which is transformers, sensors, poles, substations, and other wires related to this setup.
In case of emergency, such EVs which are charged are a potential source of power supply. However, the Ford F-150 Hybrid is a suitable option with a bidirectional charging option. In addition, the Hyundai 2022 Ioniq 5 has this feature along with the new launch of Tesla models. It can be used as an excellent source of inverter and supply power. Therefore, it is important to check the supply of such power from vehicles and its setup before utilizing it for emergency situations.
