Expert Review on Kia Carens
Pros
- The Carens comes with multiple engine options, including the 1.5-litre diesel engine, which delivers 113 bhp and 250 Nm of torque, providing smooth power delivery and impressive fuel efficiency of around 13-15 kmpl in city driving.
- It offers a unique iMT (intelligent Manual Transmission), which eliminates the clutch pedal, making driving more comfortable in traffic while retaining the control of a manual gearbox.
- The top-spec models are packed with premium features like a sunroof, ventilated seats, wireless charging, and captain seats in the second row, making it a comfortable MPV for long journeys.
Cons
- There is noticeable turbo-lag at lower RPMs, which affects acceleration, especially when overtaking, requiring frequent downshifting.
- The iMT gearbox can take some time to get used to, with occasional jerks when accelerating from a standstill.
- Though the Carens is well-equipped, the base variants might feel a bit lacking compared to competitors offering more features at similar price points
2023 Kia Carens with the diesel iMT gearbox is a well-rounded MPV that strikes a balance between comfort, fuel efficiency, and driving convenience. While the turbo-lag and learning curve with the iMT might be drawbacks, the overall package, especially in the top variants, makes it a great choice for families seeking a feature-packed and versatile MPV. Its combination of spacious interiors and premium features gives it an edge over competitors like the Maruti Suzuki XL6.
The 2023 Kia Carens has gained significant popularity in the Indian MPV market due to its mix of practicality, features, and modern design. Kia has now introduced a variant with its iMT (intelligent Manual Transmission) system, making the Carens even more versatile for city driving. With prices ranging from ₹12.65 lakh to ₹18 lakh (ex-showroom), the Carens continues to offer great value with multiple engine and gearbox options, including this clutchless semi-automatic transmission.
The iMT version is specifically aimed at customers who want the convenience of an automatic gearbox but with a more engaging driving experience similar to a manual. The introduction of iMT in the 1.5-liter diesel engine further expands the Carens lineup, offering smoother city commutes and improved fuel efficiency.
Kia Carens carries forward its design from previous models, maintaining its SUV-like stance while integrating subtle touches to distinguish it. Although there are no major changes from the earlier versions, the iMT variant does come with a small iMT badge on the tailgate to mark the semi-automatic gearbox.
Design Element | Details |
---|---|
Exterior Features | Black tiger-nose grille, LED headlamps, 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, rear LED tail lamps |
Dimensions | Remains unchanged, offering spacious seating for seven passengers |
Unique Badge | iMT badge on the tailgate differentiates it from other variants |
Despite minimal changes, the Kia Carens maintains its bold and premium appeal with a distinctive front grille, well-integrated LED lighting elements, and stylish alloy wheels. These design elements give it an SUV-like appearance that enhances its road presence, even though it competes in the MPV segment.
The Kia Carens iMT is powered by a 1.5-liter diesel engine, mated to a 6-speed iMT gearbox. The engine produces 113 bhp and 250 Nm of torque, providing smooth power delivery. However, the iMT technology is what makes this variant unique, allowing drivers to change gears manually without the need for a clutch pedal.
Engine & Performance | Details |
---|---|
Engine | 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine |
Power | 113 bhp @ 4000 rpm |
Torque | 250 Nm @ 1500 rpm |
Transmission | 6-speed intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) |
Fuel Efficiency | 13-15 km/l in city driving conditions |
- Driving Experience: The iMT system offers a clutchless driving experience, making gear shifts feel smoother than in a traditional manual setup. While the power delivery is generally smooth, there is some turbo lag at lower RPMs. During overtaking or hard acceleration, the driver may need to shift down to generate more urgency.
- Fuel Efficiency: The Carens iMT delivers 13-15 km/l in city driving, which is impressive given its size and the engine's power output
The Kia Carens iMT handles city traffic and highway cruising with ease, thanks to its balanced ride quality and smooth transmission shifts. The lack of a clutch pedal makes driving in stop-and-go traffic far less tiring than a traditional manual.
Riding & Handling | Details |
---|---|
Transmission | Smooth shifts with no clutch pedal needed; small jerk on acceleration from a standstill |
Ride Quality | Comfortable for long drives, good for city commutes |
Steering Feedback | Light steering, easy for city maneuverability |
Handling in Traffic | iMT reduces driver fatigue, easy to operate in heavy traffic |
Although the iMT gearbox takes a bit of time to get used to, once the driver adapts, it becomes a more convenient option, especially for city driving. The system even provides warnings on the MID screen to downshift to the ideal gear if the driver misses a gear shift.
The 2023 Kia Carens is known for its spacious interior and focus on passenger comfort, especially for second and third-row occupants. The cabin is practical and well-built, with ample legroom and features designed to enhance long journeys.
Comfort Feature | Details |
---|---|
Seating Capacity | Seats seven passengers comfortably |
Second-Row Features | Captain seats with adequate legroom and headroom for long journeys |
Third-Row Space | Decent space for short trips, but not ideal for adult passengers on longer drives |
Interior Design | Premium feel with blue and beige upholstery for an airy cabin experience |
Features like ventilated seats, a sunroof, and an air purifier ensure that passengers remain comfortable and cool, even during long summer drives. The Carens feels spacious and well-lit, thanks to the light-colored upholstery and large windows.
The Kia Carens is packed with features that cater to modern-day tech needs, especially in the higher variants. From advanced connectivity options to practical daily-use features, the Carens ensures a comfortable and connected driving experience.
Tech Feature | Details |
---|---|
Infotainment System | Touchscreen display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay |
Comfort Features | Ventilated seats, wireless charging, air purifier, and sunroof |
Convenience | Smart key with push-button start, auto start-stop button, and seatbelt warning system |
The auto start-stop button, a new addition, helps improve fuel efficiency, particularly during long city commutes with frequent stoplights. Other convenience features include wireless charging and captain chairs in the second row, which enhance the luxury feel.
The Carens’ 1.5-liter diesel engine, paired with the iMT gearbox, offers impressive mileage, especially for an MPV of this size. The combination of a smaller, more efficient engine and the intelligent gearbox keeps fuel consumption in check.
Driving Condition | Mileage (Approx.) |
---|---|
City Driving | 13-15 km/l |
Highway Driving | 16-17 km/l |
The iMT variant balances power with fuel efficiency, making it an ideal choice for families looking for a fuel-efficient MPV that can handle city and highway driving
The Kia Carens is priced competitively, offering a blend of premium features, modern tech, and comfort that makes it a solid value proposition in the MPV segment. The iMT variant specifically caters to drivers looking for a more relaxed yet engaging driving experience.
| Price Range | ₹12.65 lakh to ₹18 lakh (ex-showroom) | | Key Features | Wireless charging, sunroof, ventilated seats, iMT gearbox | | Recommended Variant | iMT Diesel for a balance of power, features, and fuel efficiency |
When compared to competitors like the Maruti Suzuki XL6, which is only available with a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic, the Carens offers more gearbox options and a wider array of features
Kia provides a solid network of service centers across India, ensuring peace of mind for buyers. The 2-year/75,000 km warranty is standard, with the option to extend for additional coverage.
The Kia Carens faces stiff competition from other MPVs in the Indian market, including the Maruti Suzuki XL6 and Mahindra Marazzo.
Competitor | Comparison |
---|---|
Maruti Suzuki XL6 | Fewer engine and gearbox options, lacks the premium features of the Carens |
Mahindra Marazzo | Slightly more powerful, but the Carens offers a better interior and tech suite |
The Kia Carens iMT stands out due to its wide feature set, premium cabin, and efficient diesel engine, making it a more premium option than the XL6 while also offering better technology than the Marazzo
The 2023 Kia Carens iMT is a well-rounded MPV that combines the practicality of a manual gearbox with the convenience of an automatic. It delivers on fuel efficiency, features, and comfort, making it an ideal choice for families who value space, tech, and fuel savings. With a competitive price and a range of modern features, the Carens iMT is a great package in the Indian MPV market(Kia Carens).

I have rode this car in western ghat. Tested on very difficult turns and elevations. It was smooth as butter with electronic stability control feature. You will notice that engine is initially set for lower rpm (600 only) so you have to put little more throttle. However this gives good mileage (>15) if you use 5th and 6th gear for most of the journey. There is ample space in third row make is truly comfortable 7 seater MPV. better than XUV 700 for third row. Cost is bit higher for top end models but if you use MMM coating it looks more like a luxury car ! Go for it if you have big family (6-7 people)

Kia Carens is spacious and packed with features, but the fuel efficiency could be better. The interior comfort is good, but I’ve noticed a bit of lag in the infotainment system at times. Overall, it’s a solid choice but could use a few improvements.
