10 Things You Should Know If Stopped By The Traffic Police

Rather than pleading, howling, or turning up your smartphone to the traffic cop at the checkpoint, acknowledge and realize that it's you who made a mistake purposely or unintentionally. The very least that you can do is to be informed of your rights if you get stopped by the traffic officer. And if you have no other options left, it's best to obey the officer and do any of the following things:

- When you get caught by a traffic cop, don't really try to flee. You must always be prepared with your paperwork & stop at any obligatory traffic police checks. Collaborate with them. And when that officer requests documents like your driver's licence, car insurance policy, PUC certificate, or registration certificate, show them. According to Section 130, you must 'present' the documentation. And it does not specify that you must hand up the materials.
- Don't go into a fight with a traffic officer. Rather, calmly express the position to him. And do accept the mistake that you made, intentionally or unknowingly. Consider things from the cop's point of view, and try to persuade them that you haven't made a mistake. And only when you do, make them know that you are not aware of it and will follow the rule from the next time onwards.

- You may get punished for not wearing helmets when riding the two-wheeler, failing to obey the traffic signals, exceeding the speed limit, etc. When you violate traffic laws, you may face traffic penalties. A regulation may appear insignificant from your own perspective at times. But a rule is always a rule, and breaching traffic laws may result in fines.
- You must never attempt to bribe a police officer. And please don't support such behaviour. In case you are at any fault, pay the compensation but don't add to the corruption level of the country.
- Do you have any worries related to the validity of an officer? If yes, kindly request them to show their identity card. Be polite in your gestures.
One quick note: If you do not observe the rules of roads, the car may be impounded. And in case you don't have any valid driver's license or certificate, you might be penalized drastically.

- If the traffic officer seizes the driver's licence, he must provide you with a proper receipt. And in case you are found drinking or driving or chatting on a phone when driving, the license might get revoked.
- The automobile cannot get towed while you are inside it. You must exit the vehicle before your vehicle gets towed.
- When you get held by a cop, you must appear in front of the magistrate within one day or 24 hours.
- If you get harassed by the traffic cops, you have all rights to submit your formal complaint. You may submit it at the police station, providing all required information.
- The challan that you receive must include the offence & information. In addition, it must contain the details of the officer and the court location where the trial would occur. It must state which of your documents got imprisoned.

When you get stopped by the cop, it is imperative to keep your head calm. Never overact because that would only get things in the wrong direction. If you're confident that you did not make any mistake or disobeyed the traffic rules, allow the officer to let you speak for your justice. You need to handle things politely so that everything is under control. When you keep your head calm, you definitely get peace of mind in return!
