BMW Group has updated its M8 range for the North American market, as it brings about tweaks, both to the externals and the internals of the M8 Competition Coupe, M8 Competition Convertible, and the M8 Competition Gran Coupe. In its 2022 avatar, the high-performance versions of the BMW 8 Series, feature new exterior colors, a new 12.3-inch central display, new M-specific inserts, M-specific bucket seats, and a few optional features as well, to give a breath of freshness to the complete BMW M8 range. Likewise, this update also marks the end of the non-Competition versions of these models.
Getting straight off to the figures, the BMW M8 Competition Coupe, Convertible, and Gran Coupe are powered by a 4.4-litre, V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo that develops 617bhp and 750 Nm of peak torque, while the transmission duties are handled by an 8-speed M Steptronic unit, sending power to all the wheels, which allows the performance vehicle to accelerate to 100kmph in blistering 3 seconds and tops up at 306kmph, with the M Driver's Package. BMW says the handling of the M8 Competition range is improved slightly with inputs from the M8 GTE racing car, while the Adaptive M Suspension uses data from body movement, road surface conditions, and steering input to adjust each damper individually within milliseconds using electromagnetic valves, making it a capable partner on the asphalt as well as roads.
As far as the exterior goes, the BMW M8 range receives a range of exterior colors such as Skyscraper Grey metallic, Brooklyn Grey metallic, and Isle of Man Green metallic as well as Tanzanite Blue II metallic and Frozen Pure Grey metallic. The other update comes at the front as the Adaptive LED Headlights with Laserlight are now equipped with M Shadowline inserts, dispensing a muscular look, coupled to a high-gloss black frame of the BMW kidney grille. BMW is also offering the BMW Motorsport logo from the 1970s, on the hood, trunk, and wheel hub covers in place of the usual BMW roundels as an option.
Inside, the major change comes in the form of the new BMW Live Cockpit Professional, which consists of a 12.3-inch instrument panel and Head-up Display in front of the driver, and a central Control Display, with an increased size from 10.25 to 12.3 inches. This screen is fast, intuitive, and comes with the 7th generation BMW iDrive, including navigation with BMW Maps, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
Furthermore, BMW has also added the optional M Carbon bucket in the BMW M8 Competition range, that are now lightweight in design with visible carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) surfaces, pronounced back, shoulder, and thigh bolsters, and integrated headrests. The M Carbon bucket seats are heated and electrically adjusted, feature illuminated ‘M8' badges on the headrests, and a memory function on the driver's side. The upholstery too is updated for 2022 and now comes in a combination of Full Merino Leather and Alcantara trim, previously available in a Black/Midrand Beige combination, is now also available in Black/Sakhir Orange, while the Black Alcantara extends to the dashboard and the upper areas of the door panels.
