August 2016 Two-Wheeler Sales Report

It seems that the month of August that just went by, brought cheers to the entire automotive industry. The 2-wheeler industry too saw good times. Manufacturers such as Honda Two Wheelers, Royal Enfield, Yamaha, TVS and Hero MotoCorp saw a growth of 20 per cent over the month of August 2015.

It seems that the month of August that just went by, brought cheers to the entire automotive industry. While the 4-wheeler sales did see a growth and Renault bagged its highest ever monthly sales, the 2-wheeler industry too saw good times. Manufacturers such as Honda Two Wheelers, Royal Enfield, Yamaha and Hero MotoCorp saw a growth of 20 per cent over the month of August 2015. Honda Two Wheelers in particular has had one of its best ever months as far as sales are concerned. Here is a manufacturer-wise breakdown for the sales figures of August 2016.

1. Honda Two Wheelers:

What a month it has been for Honda! The Japanese kingpin of two-wheeler segment in India registered the highest ever monthly sales, the highest ever domestic sales and the highest ever exports! Phew! Honda sold 4, 92,416 units totally (domestic and exports combined) in August 2016 as compared to 3, 95,196 units in August 2015. Also, it sold 4, 66,342 units domestically in the same month as compared to 3, 73,136 units in August last year, which is a growth of 25 per cent. Another significant statistic is the fact that Honda's Year-On-Year sales grew by 97,220 units. This is also the second time in a row that Honda's scooter sales went past the 3 lakh mark to end at 3,36,393 units as compared to 2,46,763 units sold in August last year, growing by 27 per cent. The motorcycle sales too went up by 11 per cent from 1, 26,373 units in August 2015 to 1, 29,949 units in August 2016. The Honda Two Wheeler story doesn't end here. It also registered all-time monthly high exports of 26,074 units. In a space of barely 5 months, the exports crossed the 1-lakh mark. Also, more than 43 per cent of new two-wheeler sales were the courtesy of Honda Two wheelers in the April-August 2016 period, where a massive 3,99,470 units were sold. Surely, there is no catching Honda as far as sales numbers are concerned.

2. Royal Enfield:

The success story for Royal Enfield continues as well. The Chennai-based manufacturer saw a growth of 32 per cent in total sales (domestic and export combined) in August 2016, where it sold 55,721 units compared to 42,360 units sold in the same period last month. The domestic sales for august 2016 were 54,735 units as compared to 41,600 units sold last year in August 2015, which is a growth of 32 per cent. From April 2016 till August 2016, Royal Enfield has sold 2, 56,582 units, which is a growth of 35 per cent over 1, 89,733 units sold in august last year.

3. India Yamaha Motor:

Yamaha too saw a growth of 22 per cent with domestic sales of 74,868 units in August 2016 over 61,440 units sold in August last year. The domestic sales includes motorcycles sold in Nepal as well. Yamaha recently introduced the disc brake version of its Cygnus Alpha and the Ray-ZR which is getting good traction. Roy Kurian, Vice president, sales & marketing, Yamaha Motor India Sales Pvt. Ltd. said that, "The major breakthrough in sales numbers is the result of Yamaha's continuous dedication to develop its products by exploring widely held customer choices. The vantage through strategic approach of customer centric activities and network development has contributed to the strong momentum. Yamaha received fantastic response from the market for its impeccable line up of scooters like Yamaha Fascino, Cygnus Alpha (disc brake) and newly introduced Cygnus Ray-ZR." Yamaha had also invested Rs. 66 crore this year in the second R&D centre in India.

4. Hero MotoCorp:

Yet another manufacturer who had a reason to smile was Hero. It sold 6, 16,424 units in August 2016 as compared to 4, 80,537 units with a growth of 28 per cent. Pawan Munjal, the CMD and CEO said that Hero will be launching 15 products by the end of the current fiscal year. Also, it will be launching three new products before the end of the festive season. The first will be the all-new 150cc Hero Achiever which will launch towards the end of September 2016.

5. TVS Motor:

Like all of the manufacturers above, TVS too had a good month in August 2016. It sold 2, 38,984 units in August this year as compared to 1, 83,653 units sold in August last year with a growth of 30.1 per cent. Also, its scooter sales saw a growth of 5.1 per cent with 76,572 units sold in August 2016 as compared to 72,865 units sold same time last year. The motorcycle sales grew by 31.2 per cent to 1, 14,195 units sold in August this year.
