F1: Leclerc Steals Pole From Issue Struck Verstappen

- Charles Leclerc took pole position on his second Q3 attempt.
- Verstappen had to abandon his second Q3 lap due to an issue with the DRS.
- Home-hero Carlos Sainz wrapped up the top 3.
Charles Leclerc beat title rival Max Verstappen and home-hero Carlos Sainz to grab the pole position for the Spanish GP. Leclerc made a mistake entering the penultimate corner on his first Q3 attempt and ended up spinning, but managed to put together a brilliant lap on his second attempt, which put him over 3 tenths clear of the rest of the field. Statistically, the driver starting from pole position has gone on to win the race more often than not on this race track, but it would be anything but straightforward for Leclerc to bag the win tomorrow, as the Ferrari stable has been struggling with tyre management for the last couple of races.

Max Verstappen had to abandon his final Q3 attempt due to a DRS issue which impeded his speed on the start-finish straight, as the reigning world champion jumped on the radio to report that his car was losing power, unaware of the issue. He remains one of the few drivers and the only front-runner to not have lost a position on the opening lap of the race, and will look to continue that run tomorrow and perhaps get the run on Leclerc into first corner. Circuit Barcelona-Catalunya is notoriously difficult to make an overtake on, and Verstappen might have to rely on clever tyre strategies if he is to convert his P2 into a win tomorrow, should he not be able to pass the championship leader at the start.

Max Verstappen will have to rely on better tyre management to try and snatch away the win..
Home hero Carlos Sainz had a lackluster qualifying, as the Spaniard could not get on to the front row yet again, despite having a title contending car. Tomorrow will be the best time for Sainz to get his first Grand Prix win with the Spanish fans cheering him, as he looks to recover from his early troubles and mount a championship fight. Fellow Spaniard and two-time world champion Fernando Alonso had a miserable qualifying, and he starts tomorrow's race in a disappointing P17.

Carlos Sainz is yet to start a Grand Prix on the front row of the grid.
Perhaps the most interesting turn of pace was in the Mercedes garage, as Russel qualified up in P4, just 6 tenths behind Leclerc. While this pace may still not be enough, its a clear indication that Mercedes' upgrades brought at Barcelona are working, and are a step in the right direction. Lewis Hamilton is still struggling with the car however, and could only manage P6, behind Sergio Perez's Red Bull.

Mercedes brought several upgrades to the W13 in Barcelona taking it closer to the top 2 teams.
Valtteri Bottas and Kevin Magnussen also delivered great laps in qualifying yet again, putting their cars up on the 4th row. Lando Norris also drove a decent lap in Q2 to put him up in the top 10, but his lap time was deleted for the finest of margins. McLaren protested the deletion of his lap time, but FIA rejected the appeal, promoting Mick Schumacher to P10. Daniel Ricciardo struggled through the initial stages of Qualifying, but did enough later on to put his 'papaya' coloured car in P9.
