Nico Rosberg set the fastest time at the FP1 session of the Russian Grand Prix at the Sochi circuit. On a new circuit, Rosberg set a best time of 1:42.311 to beat team-mate Lewis Hamilton by just 0.065s.

Jenson Button was quickest and posted a time over a second faster than anyone else in the opening half hour, but the times tumbled and he saw himself in third place for McLaren. Fernando Alonso was right behind the McLaren with Kevin Magnussen in fifth as McLaren enjoyed a strong start to the race weekend.

Sergio Perez was sixth for Force India while it was Daniil Kvyat who came in seventh on his home circuit. Kimi Raikkonen, Jean-Eric Vergne and Valtteri Bottas rounded out the top ten, although Bottas had his running limited by a strange problem.

If you're wondering what happened to the two Red Bulls are, they didn't feature in the top ten. Daniel Ricciardo was 12th and Sebastian Vettel 14th.

The sole Marussia of Max Chilton was slowest, 4.9s off the pace. The other side of the garage housed Bianchi's car, which is ready to race but will stay on display as a tribute to the Frenchman.
