A government official said, "From today, GPS is mandatory for public transport vehicles, including DTC buses, autorickshaws, taxis, contract carriage buses. We will deploy our teams to take strict action against the violators."
The official also said that transport department will not issue fitness certificates to those vehicles which do not have GPS. However, sources claim that the department may give 15 days to the owners of taxis, autos and buses to install GPS in their vehicles.
Though initially the department's order to install GPS was meant for only autorickshaws, it later added taxis and gramin sewa to the ambit. This lead the taxi unions to threaten to launch protests against the government if the decision was not withdrawn.
