With the fuel cost constantly touching the higher ends, many people are opting to switch to CNG. There are two ways you can switch your car to CNG fuel – buying a new CNG car or retrofitting a CNG kit.
While the first option is costly, the latter comes with its cons. Before you make the final decision, you should consider a handful of reasons why retrofitting might not be the best option. Read ahead to learn more!
They Might Not Be Compatible
One of the biggest hurdles of switching your car from petrol/diesel to CNG is that not all CNG kits are compatible with all vehicles. Moreover, your vehicle probably doesn't allow fuel customizations. On the off chance that you find a compatible CNG kit for your car, you have to visit the RTO and change the fuel type for your vehicle.

Installation and Maintenance is Costly
One thing that deters people from installing CNG kits is the high upfront cost. Depending on your car's model, you might need to spend about Rs 50 to 60 thousand. Additionally, maintaining a CNG car tends to cost more than regular diesel/petrol vehicles. You will notice that your vehicle requires frequent visits to service stations after installing the kit.
CNG is Not Available Everywhere
You never have to worry about refuelling with a diesel or petrol car. However, if you plan to install a CNG kit in your vehicle, get ready to face trouble finding a gas station. You might have to drive far to a CNG gas refuelling station. So, consider this factor before retrofitting a CNG kit.
Car Insurance Policy Premium Increases
Car insurance premium depends on a range of factors, and one of them happens to be fuel type. When switching your car's fuel type to CNG, expect a 10% raise on policy premiums. The increase in rate will depend on the car model and type of policy. Discuss the changes with your insurer before making any moves.

Unfortunately, your car will suffer performance degradation once you equip it with a CNG kit. The underlying reason is that the car's engine is not getting enough lubricant. With a retrofitted CNG kit, the corrosion factor is significantly higher. To keep up with your car's performance, you have to take it for frequent servicing.
