Jaguar Unveils Lightweight E-Type

Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations has unveiled their new Lightweight E-Type prototype, ahead of its debut at Pebble Beach. Clearly, this was no easy task for the people at Jaguar as they had to keep the car historically accurate while also keeping into account that it has been 50 years since the original model was produced.

The Lightweight E-Type traces its roots back to 1963, when Jaguar announced plans to build 18 models. However, only twelve were built so Jaguar is following through and completing the remaining six units.

This task required special skills and it came as no surprise when Jaguar handed over the project to the skilled craftsmen and women at JLR Special Operations. These marksmen managed to build a stunning 'Car Zero' prototype which is handcrafted and features an aluminium monocoque, aluminium body closures (bonnet/doors/trunk) and a removable aluminum roof.

Inside you get Connolly leather seats, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, an aluminum gear knob and machined switchgear. Power is delivered by an aluminium 3.8-litre 6-cylinder engine - with triple Weber carburetors - that produces 340bhp and develops 380Nm of torque. It is connected to a 4-speed close-ratio manual transmission which will enable the model to have rapid acceleration.

The six cars will be sold as period competition vehicles and all will be suitable for FIA homologation for historic motorsport purposes.
