Kashmir Gets Its First Ever Car And Bike Exhibition

- Cars like the Chevy Impala, Nissan Jonga, Morris Minor were on display
- A 1969 Royal Enfield along with other vintage scooters were in attendance
- RVs also made it to Kashmir's first-of-its-kind event
A car and bike show featuring several vintage vehicles was inaugurated today on the banks of the Nigeen lake here. The exhibition was a first of its kind in Kashmir. An official of the Tourism Department said Tourism Secretary Sarmad Hafeez inaugurated the exclusive exhibition of vintage, classic, modified and modern collection of cars, motorbikes and bicycles. The exhibition was organised by 'Kashmir Off-Road' in collaboration with the Tourism Department at the Nigeen club as part of tourism promotion activities in the valley, an official said.
He said a large number of people visited the exhibition to see the collection of around 60 vintage, classic and modern cars dating from the mid-20th century to present day. On display were vintage cars like the Chevrolet Fleet Master of 1942, Nissan Jonga of 1965, Chevrolet Impala of 1969, Morris Mirror of 1952 and motorbikes of the likes of Royal Enfield of 1969 and scooters. Off-road jeeps and the modern day BMWs also caught the attention of visitors, he said.
"Big trailers such as recreational vehicles (RV)--having living space and all amenities found in a home--or an old model Atlas cycle fitted with dynamo headlight were also on display for motor vehicles lovers," the official said.
Hafeez said the exhibition had a beautiful setting of natural beauty on the banks of Nigeen lake and that the department wanted to encourage activities which create some sort of buzz in the valley.
"We want positive news to come out of the valley and make Srinagar a happening place. If tourists come here, they should not only see the natural beauty, for which valley is already known, but also should enjoy different activities here," Hafeez said.
Director Tourism Mahmood Shah said the department has also lined up more activities in the autumn and winter. "We want to promote tourism by joining hands with private stakeholders and work as a family. We will support every event which is aimed at promoting tourism and creating a buzz here, Shah said.
He said the department wanted to create an ambiance in Kashmir which would encourage tourists to visit the valley. Shah said the event has also generated interested among people who own such old cars and it would be an annual event.
"Those who could not participate in its first edition this year will participate in the future. There are many people owning such cars who can display them here," he added.
