Highlights

Mahindra has confirmed that it will be debuting the new XUV400 electric SUV in India in September this year. Ahead of its debut a test mule of the model has now been caught testing out on the road. A short video showing the test mule reveals much of the SUV’s design and reveals that the rear is slightly altered to that of the XUV300 though much of the design is the same.

The XUV400 shares the same platform as the XUV300 though is expected to measure in at a little over 4m in length as compared to the latter’s sub 4m length. This is likely due to the fact that the sub-compact segment benefits do not extend to EVs. Starting from the front, the design is nearly unchanged from the eXUV300 concept from the 2020 Auto Expo. The closed-off front gives it away as an EV while the lower bumper now features a slim vent likely to help cool the battery and motor. The headlamps are toned down to production spec units as well.

Down the sides, the design to is unchanged from the XUV300 with only a closer look revealing a slight design update to the rear. The rear overhang appears to be slightly longer than on the XUV300 while the tail lamps too appear to have been tweaked.

In terms of powertrain, the company at the 2020 Expo had said that the SUV would develop 130 bhp from a single electric motor paired with a 40kWh battery and a range of up to 300 km.

The XUV400 is expected to be positioned above the Tata Nexon EV when it goes on sale. Mahindra is targeting a market launch for the SUV early next year.
