Highlights

Safety cars or pace cars, as they are called, are vehicles which restrict the speeds of participating motorcycles or cars upon the racetrack for a caution period, in case there is any poor weather or a track obstruction. The aim here is to ensure proper clearance of the said obstruction under safer circumstances for marshals or wait for better conditions. During this caution period, the safety car comes into the track before the participating F1 race leader. Based upon the regulations implemented, competitors cannot usually outstrip the safety car and this will lead the entire field at a speed that is already determined.

F1 has received two safety cars officially this season. Aston Martin will be providing medical and safety cars for the championship along with Mercedes which will be changing the AMG car paint to silver from red. Aston Martin has returned to the circuit for the very first time in around sixty years, while displaying their DBX Medical Car and Vantage Safety Car. The Vantage Safety Car comes with a twin-turbo 4.0 litre V8 engine that hits 60 miles per hour in just 3.5 seconds and several aero and suspension modifications have also been carried out.

The DBX Medical Car can hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, making 550 PS and 700 Nm of maximum torque. There is a burn kit, defibrillator, fire extinguishers, and more equipment for the vehicle. Mercedes supplied the official safety cars to F1 from 1996 onwards and are sharing the duties for the first time with Aston Martin now. Their safety car is the AMG GT R while the medical car is the C 63 S Estate. Bernd Maylander will be piloting the Mercedes and Aston Martin safety cars while the medical cars will be driven by Alan van der Merwe.
