The Reason Behind Flat Spots On Tyres

- Allen Park, Michigan, is home to the largest tire in the world.
- The early variations of tires were white instead of black.
- The rubber that is used for tires happens to turn white over time.
Taking care of the car and knowing what problems plague the car are important aspects of owning a car. Without these, the car will start to malfunction, which would mean a lot of headaches for the owner. The tires can cause major problems if they are not properly looked after. A problem like – “flat spots” can cause major issues that can lead to dangerous situations if left unattended. Let us try to find more about what these flat spots are.

What are flat spots?
A worn-out section of the tire tread is known as a “flat spot”. Flat spots can be difficult to see at first, but the symptoms can certainly be looked out for.

Symptoms of flat spots
- Visible spots: Flat spots are visible in certain sections of the tire – mostly when the car has been sitting idle for a long time.
- Vibration: A vibrating sensation when the car is being driven can indicate this.
- Bumping noise: When the flat spot hits the ground, often a thump can be heard.
- Difficulty in steering: The tires tend to become wobbly and unbalanced, making it difficult for the driver to drive.
Reasons for flat spots
There are certain reasons as to why flat spots can occur: -
- Parking for too long: This is one of the primary reasons for flat spots in tires. Even if the person has left the car parked idly for a month, spots can develop in various tread sections.
- Cold weather: There is a very simple explanation for this. Colder weather means a drop in air pressure. The drop in temperature also causes a drop in the tire's air pressure. This, coupled with the car standing idle, can cause serious problems.
- Rash braking: There are many problems with sudden and harsh braking – flat spot being one of them. When the brakes are applied suddenly, the friction between the tread and the pavement increases, which wears the tire out, which can lead to flat spots on the tire.

How to prevent flat spots?
If the owner is looking to avoid flat spots, these steps could be taken:
- Continuously checking the tire pressure. If the level isn't up to the manufacturer suggested standard, get the tire inflated immediately.
- One of the easiest ways to ensure that flat-spotting doesn't happen is to keep moving the car around. Even a small drive can ensure that the tire remains in good shape and no flat spots occur on the tread.
- Taking the weight off the tires can be a great way to keep the tires from wearing out. If the vehicle is properly put on jack stands, flat spots can be avoided on the tire.
It is essential for the owner to regularly drive the car around, even for a short duration, to keep the tires in perfect condition.
