Expanding its existing voluntary service campaign for Corolla sedan, Toyota Motor has now added over 7,100 units of the executive sedan to the recall list. The recall has been initiated to fix defective passenger-side airbags supplied by Japanese component maker Takata and affects Corolla models manufactured between April, 2007 and June, 2008.

A statement on TKM's official website further states, "In addition to that, few vehicles which were manufactured between June 2008 and July 2008 fall under the '7 year mandate' of voluntary recall code and for the same, TKM will initiate a Voluntary Recall to inspect and rectify the vehicles."

The problem, which affects cars across the globe, may lead to incorrect deployment of the airbag inflator, which, in turn, poses the risk of causing grievous injuries to occupants.

However, Toyota isn't the only carmaker to initiate a recall as a consequence of the Takata scandal; other carmakers including Honda, Nissan, and Renault have recalled their models to fix the same issue. Globally, over 30 million cars have been recalled as a result of the Takata airbag fiasco.

Though Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) first recalled the Corolla in November, 2014, it affected the diesel model of the car and was to "to replace the components contributing to engine oil entry into air intake system". The recall campaign concerning airbags was first started in May, 2015 - the Special Service Campaign for passenger side air bag in the Corolla model included inspection and replacement of the inflators of airbag for Corolla vehicles sold in India and, manufactured between July, 2003 and Mar, 2007.
