Uber recently announced its goal to induct 1 million female drivers to its fleet. In partnership with UN Women, the company intends to achieve this aim over the next 5 years to 'accelerate economic opportunity for women'.

Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, UN Women Executive Director, and Travis Kalanick, Uber CEO, said, "We intend to invest in long-term programs in local communities where we live and work, as Uber commits to creating 1,000,000 jobs for women globally on the Uber platform by 2020. This important mission can only be accomplished when all women have direct access to safe and equitable earning opportunities. We look forward to a partnership where UN Women and Uber will drive more access to these types of opportunities around the world."

Though the company hasn't stated how many women cab drivers it already employs in its fleet across the world, a Reuters piece said that out of of its 160,000 drivers in the US, 14 per cent are women.
