Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak Electric Race Car Debuts

Volkswagen has finally taken the wraps of its fully-electric supercar, the I.D. R Pikes Peak, at Ales in France ahead of its official debut at the Pike Peak in June. The Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak will look to compete in the Pikes Peak International Hill climb in Colorado Springs, Colorado on June 24, seeking to beat the existing electric car record of 8:57.118 minutes in the annual 'Race to the Clouds'. With the ability to go from standstill to 100kmph in just 2.25 seconds, the VW I.D. R Pikes Peak is faster than most of the Formula 1 and Formula E cars.

"Volkswagen's goal is to reach the pinnacle of electro mobility with the I.D. family," said Dr. Frank Welsch, Volkswagen Member of the Board of Management with responsibility for Development. "The hill climb on Pikes Peak will definitely be a real acid test for the electric drive. Customers have always benefitted from the findings made in motorsport, and we expect to take these findings and use them as a valuable impetus for the development of future I.D. models."

The most amazing part about the VW I.D. R Pikes Peak are the digits that electric race car functions on. With a total weight of 1133kg, the I.D. R Pikes Peak can generate 680 bhp of max power and 649 NM of peak torque from its two electric engines. The lithium-ion batteries used in the I.D. R Pikes Peak is used as the energy storage system that makes it easier to store and use energy during the drive. According to the company, around 20 percent of the electric energy required is generated during the drive, and during braking, the electric engines act as generators, converting some of the braking energy into electricity and feeding this into the battery.

Defending Pikes Peak champion, Romain Dumas, will be at the wheel of the Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak for the attempt to break the existing record for electric cars. He has also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice.
