15-Year-Old Cars May Not be Banned in The Capital

Remember the government's proposal to remove 15-year-old vehicles from Delhi-NCR's roads? Well, that's probably not going to happen. At least as far as private vehicles are concerned. The Centre seems to have changed its mind about the proposal that first came to be considered as a measure curb pollution in the capital.

Though the ministry of road transport and highways has now deemed the idea of mandating age limit of private vehicles as a 'short-cut approach', it might enforce the plan for commercial and transport vehicles.

Furthermore, the ministry now intends to enforce stricter and more rigorous fitness tests for vehicles and also proposed the reduction of fitness testing period. For new vehicles, it recommended reducing the fitness testing period from 15 years to 5 and every 2 - 3 years once a vehicle is 15-years-old.

Moving on to improving the national Air Quality Index (AQI), the ministry of petroleum and natural gas claims it will be able to supply BS-IV compliant petrol and diesel to the entire country by April 1, 2017. That's not all though; the ministry is also contemplating a direct switch to BS-VI from BS-IV by April 1, 2020 across the nation.
