F1: Ferrari Confirm Mick Schumacher To Stay At Haas In 2022

- Schumacher will be racing with the Haas F1 team in 2022
- The son of Michael Schumacher is being groomed to be a Ferrari driver
- In 2023 if Carlos Sainz doesn't perform well, he may have a shot
While for a while it has been expected that Mick Schumacher will spend his second season in F1 at the Haas F1 team, now even Ferrari has more or less confirmed that the reigning F2 champion will be getting in a second season at the American F1 that's also a Ferrari engine customer.
"In his season at Haas 2022, I see a great opportunity for Mick to show what he really has to offer. We know what talent is latent in him and we are happy with his development," said Ferrari F1 boss Mattia Binotto in an interview with Speedweek.com.
He had previously said that he had been impressed with the level of speed the young German had shown. He also challenged Schumacher to earn a seat at the Ferrari works team for 2023 which is when Carlos Sainz Jr's contract comes up for renewal.
"The long-term goal for Mick is clear, he is being trained to drive for Ferrari one day. But first, he has to learn quietly. It would be wrong to put pressure on him. Even though we expect a lot from him," Binotto added.

Mick Schumacher has previously driven his father's Ferrari F1 cars numerous times
Earlier, Haas team principal Guenther Steiner had said that Schumacher was more or less confirmed for the 2022 season at the team but details were being worked out as it involved three parties that included Ferrari as Schumacher was a graduate of the Ferrari Driver Academy. Ferrari is a close partner for the Haas F1 team and is also its engine supplier.
Ferrari shares the salary of Mick Schumacher with the Haas F1 team. Schumacher, who is the son of 7-time world champion Michael Schumacher has impressed in what is the slowest car on the grid as Haas decided to bring minimal changes to the 2021 car in view of saving costs and developing a competitive car for the sweeping 2022 regulation changes.
There had been chatter that Ferrari may shift Schumacher to the Alfa Romeo team which is also a customer team but now Ferrari doesn't control a seat that it had. It already has another FDA graduate in Antonio Giovinazzi in the Alfa Romeo alongside its former driver and its last world champion Kimi Raikkonen who many expect will retire at the end of the 2021 season. Giovinazzi is expected to stay at Alfa Romeo while Raikkonen could be replaced by fellow Fin, Valtteri Bottas.
