Highlights

  • More than 100,000 people are expected per day
  • Many believe despite restrictions on crowd it will be a massive event
  • Jan Lammers believes it will be the biggest sporting event in Netherlands

As the second half of the 2021 F1 season is poised to be a spicy affair between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, one of the highlights will be the race in Zandvoort which will make the return of the Dutch GP that too on the home turf of the world championship prospect Max Verstappen. Considering the competitiveness of the Red Bull and the spices fight that's going on between 7-time world champion Lewis Hamilton a mega crowd is expected at the race after it was cancelled in 2020 because of COVID19.

It was reported that the race would feature over 100,000 fans per day. And right now it seems to be on track for the same even if due to COVID there is a restriction of 70 per cent attendance only. This would make it the biggest event in Dutch sporting history as the other big sport in the country is football and it doesn't have massive stadiums like the ones seen in Spain and the UK.

The title fight between Verstappen has become acrimonious with the Dutch fans booing Hamilton

On August 13, the Dutch government will provide clarity over the exact attendance that can be expected, which according to the sporting director of the Zandvoort track Jan Lammers is set to be the biggest sporting event in Dutch history.

"We have no choice. We're going to be all set," Lammers told the NIS.

"We can't say 'we need more seats' on August 25. We have a duty to welcome all people with a ticket and we are working on that now. It is now about implementing the plans that were developed a long time ago. About 70 percent of the stands are now standing. Everything is on schedule," he added.

"We are convinced that the figures on the coronavirus are moving in the right direction. If this continues, we think that all sporting events can simply resume. Sometimes I think I'm in Indianapolis with all those stands," he said indicating that sporting events could be opened up taking the example of the Indy 500.

"Before there is even one person in those stands, I realise that we are all involved in the biggest sporting event in the history of the Netherlands. And that's very special," he said.
